Cup of Coffee: Velasquez homers twice, drives in seven runs; Rodriguez also goes deep


7/7 Cup of Coffee:
Monday's slate consisted of three high-scoring games for Boston's rookie-level affiliates. In the Florida Complex League, Jorge Rodriguez (pictured) homered and Maximus Martin picked up two hits. In the Dominican Summer League, Isaac Velasquez went off for two home runs and seven RBIs as part of his first career three-hit performance.

Jorge Rodriguez put together a productive afternoon at the plate, going 1 for 3 with his third home run of the season, one RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and two walks. Maximus Martin went 2 for 3 with one run scored and one walk. Jhorman Bravo and Edwin Darville each went 2 for 4. Bravo drove in one run, stole one base, and drew one walk. Darville drove in one run, scored another, and drew one walk. Harold Rivas doubled, scored one run, and drew one walk. Josue Brito and Dorian Soto combined for two RBIs and three walks.

Merlin Bido went one inning in his start for the FCL squad, allowing two earned runs on two hits, three walks, and one strikeout. Yomar De La Rosa, Yoelvin Chirino, and Yander Bonaci combined to surrender 10 additional runs (eight earned) over seven total innings of relief.

Isaac Velasquez led the way offensively for the Blue squad, going 3 for 3 with one double, two home runs, seven RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks. Esterlin Casanova also tallied three hits, as he went 3 for 5 with three runs scored and one walk. Enmanuel Figuereo went 2 for 4 with one RBI, one run scored, one stolen base, and two walks. Miguel Welch tripled, drove in one run, scored twice, stole two bases, and drew one walk as part of a 2-for-5 day. Eber Miranda went 2 for 6 with one double, two RBIs, two runs scored, and one stolen base. Garielvin Silverio drove in one run, scored another, stole one base, and drew two walks. Santiago Yanes drove in one run, scored twice, and drew two walks. Anderson Gonzalez had two RBIs, two runs, one stolen base, and one walk.

Allan Griman struggled in his start, surrendering six earned runs on two hits, two walks, three hit by pitches, and no strikeouts. Leosmar Perez followed and pitched well, allowing only one earned run on four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Michael Manjerres (who was credited with the winning decision), Jesus Martinez, and Jainer Almanza combined to give up four additional runs across four total innings out of the bullpen.

Four members of the Red squad's lineup recorded multiple hits on Monday. Axell Herrera went 2 for 3 with one RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Anderber Uribina, Geomaikel Martinez, and Edgardo Gutierrez all went 2 for 5. Urbina doubled, drove in one run, and scored another. Martinez tripled, drove in three runs, and scored once. Gutierrez had two RBIs and scored one run. Lester Suarez went 1 for 2 with one double, three RBIs, two runs scored, and two walks. Joskairo Ramirez went 1 for 3 with one double, two runs scored, and two walks. Gustavo Antunez had one RBI, one run scored, one stolen base, and one walk.

It was a tough day for the Red squad's pitching staff. Starter Steven Garcia lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing four earned runs on four hits, two walks, one hit by pitch, and no strikeouts. Dani Richar, Ranfi Vargas, and Leonel Figuera combined to give up nine additional runs (seven earned), while Yariel Valdez was credited with a scoreless frame of relief.

Player of the Day: Isaac Velasquez gets the nod for recording the first three-hit game of his young career on Monday. The 16-year-old infielder is now batting .226/.385/.597 with three doubles, one triple, six home runs, 24 RBIs, 11 runs scored, one stolen base, 12 walks, and 21 strikeouts through 22 Dominican Summer League games (78 plate appearances) this season. He signed for $370,000 out of Colombia in January and is not yet ranked among the organization's top 60 prospects.
