Cup of Coffee: Ramirez finishes double shy of cycle in DSL

7/21 Cup of Coffee:
As Wilyer Abreu (pictured) took home American League Player of the Week honors and the Red Sox extended their winning streak to 14 games, Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 0-2 on Monday. The FCL squad was rained out, while both DSL squads fell to their counterparts from the Rays organization.

Allan Griman took the loss in his start for the Blue squad after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts over three innings. Four relievers combined to surrender 17 additional runs (11 earned) across 5 2/3 innings. Maikol Tovar, traditionally an outfielder, struck out the lone batter he faced in his first professional appearance as a pitcher. At the plate, Esterlin Casanova accounted for his side's only extra-base hit by going 1 for 3 with one double, one RBI, one run scored, and two walks. Miguel Welch and Isaac Velasquez each went 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run, and two walks as well. Santiago Yanes, Enmanuel Figuereo, and Eber Miranda also drove in runs.

This back-and-forth affair featured a 52-minute rain delay and ended in defeat for the Red squad. Joskairo Ramirez finished a double shy of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with one triple, one home run, four RBIs, one run scored, and one walk. Geomaikel Martinez singled three times and scored one run as part of a three-hit day. Anderber Urbina doubled, drove in one run, and scored another out of the leadoff spot. Jhonny Osta clubbed a solo shot for his only hit. Dawvris Brito drew two walks and scored two runs.

On the mound, Steven Garcia went 1 2/3 innings in his start, surrendering six earned runs on three hits (including one home run), four walks, and two strikeouts. Dani Richar, Leonel Figuera, Ranfi Vargas, and Yariel Valdez combined to allow three runs (one earned) over the next 8 1/3 innings. Ranci Castillo then took the loss after giving up the winning (unearned) run on a walk-off single that scored the automatic runner in the bottom of the 11th.

Player of the Day: Fresh off a trip to the Dominican Summer League All-Star Game, Joskairo Ramirez gets the nod for his three-hit performance on Monday. The 17-year-old outfielder is now batting .300/.418/.545 with nine doubles, three triples, four home runs, 24 RBIs, 23 runs scored, seven stolen bases, 17 walks, and 18 strikeouts through 32 games (134 plate appearances) for DSL Red Sox Red this season. He is currently ranked as the organization's No. 56 prospect after signing for $800,000 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in January.
