Cup of Coffee: Marin, Zanetello shine in FCL slugfest; Brito, Silverio stand out in DSL


7/17 Cup of Coffee:
Thursday's slate featured three close games for Boston's rookie-level affiliates. Liosward Marin (pictured) and the rehabbing Nazzan Zanetello combined for five hits in Florida Complex League action. In the Dominican Summer League, Garielvin Silverio and Dawvris Brito put together multi-hit performances.

The FCL squad was on the wrong side of this high-scoring affair. Liosward Marin led the way offensively, going 3 for 5 with two doubles, three RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Nazzan Zanetello, continuing his rehab assignment, went 2 for 3 with one double, two RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Tavano Baker, who pinch-hit for Zanetello in the sixth inning, also doubled and scored one run. Jostin Ogando went 2 for 3 with one RBI, two runs scored, one stolen base, and two walks. Edwin Darville drove in two runs, scored twice, stole three bases, and drew one walk. Josue Brito drew three walks and scored one run. Fabian Bonilla drove in one run, scored twice, and drew two walks. Harold Rivas drove in two runs, scored another, and stole one base.

On the mound, Berny Ortiz got the start and went just 1 2/3 innings against an FCL Braves lineup that featured big league veterans Ronald Acuna Jr., Ha-Seong Kim, and Andrew McCutchen. He surrendered six runs (five earned) on three hits, four walks, one hit by pitch, and no strikeouts. Jeison Payano gave up five additional runs, four of which came on an Acuna Jr. grand slam. Christopher Cordero scattered three hits, three walks, and one hit by pitch while striking out a pair over 2 2/3 scoreless frames, while Eddison Septimo (who was charged with a blown save) and Yander Bonaci (who took the loss) combined to allow three additional runs the rest of the way.

Miguel Welch and Garielvin Silverio accounted for four of their side's six hits on Thursday. Welch went 2 for 4 with one triple, one RBI, and two runs scored. Silverio went 2 for 3 with one double, one triple, three RBI, and two runs scored. Santiago Yanes drove in a run as well. On the flip side, Emanuel Jimenez took the loss in his start for the Blue squad after allowing two earned runs on five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over four innings. Carlos Falcon and Jesus Martinez combined to surrender six additional runs across three innings of relief.

Dawvris Brito had a productive day at the plate for the Red squad, going 2 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Edgardo Gutierrez went 2 for 4 with one run scored and one stolen base. Axell Herrera drove in one run, scored twice, and drew two walks. Joskairo Ramirez doubled and scored one run. Jhonny Osta drove in three runs and stole one base. Pitching-wise, Isaac Brujan went 2 2/3 innings in his start, surrendering four earned runs on five hits (including one home run), two walks, and three strikeouts. Wascar Berroa worked 1 1/3 scoreless frames of relief, while Ranci Castillo took the loss after allowing an unearned run to score in the bottom of the seventh.

Player of the Day: Liosward Marin gets the nod for putting together his second three-hit performance of 2026. The 20-year-old catcher/first baseman is now batting .310/.419/.592 with five doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI, 19 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, 13 walks, and 15 strikeouts in 26 games (86 plate appearances) this season, his second in the Florida Complex League. He originally signed with the Red Sox for $10,000 as an international free agent out of Venezuela in January 2023.
