Cup of Coffee: Guzman stays hot for Salem; Sogard starts triple play in Worcester


7/10 Cup of Coffee:
Thursday's slate featured three high-scoring games, two one-run games, and two postponements. Nick Sogard (pictured) drove in two runs and started a triple play in Worcester's win over Rochester. Franklin Arias, Nate Baez, and Brooks Brannon all homered in Portland's loss to New Hampshire. Antonio Anderson, Justin Gonzales, and Stanley Tucker all went deep in Greenville's win over Greensboro. Adonys Guzman left the yard in Salem's loss to Columbia. Jhorman Bravo tallied three hits and stole six bases in the Florida Complex League.

Osvaldo Berrios went three innings in his start for Worcester, allowing only one run on three hits (including a home run), one walk, one hit-by-pitch, and one strikeout. He threw 39 pitches (24 strikes) and generated seven whiffs. Tyler Uberstine also gave up a solo homer over an otherwise effective three innings of relief and was ultimately credited with the win. Lefties Tyler Samaniego and Alec Gamboa combined to surrender five additional runs before Gamboa closed things out in the ninth.

Nick Sogard stood out at the plate, going 2 for 3 with one double, two RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. He also stood out defensively by starting a 6-4-3 triple play in the third inning. Tyler McDonough, like Sogard, went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and one stolen base. Andrew Knizner doubled in three runs with his only hit of the night. Braiden Ward scored one run and stole his 39th base of the season.

Gage Ziehl struggled and took the loss in his start for Portland after surrendering a season-high eight earned runs on seven hits (including three home runs), three walks, two hit batters, and four strikeouts over three-plus innings. He threw 73 pitches (42 strikes) and generated five whiffs. Erik Rivera, Reidis Sena, and Raudelis Martinez combined to allow an additional seven runs (two earned) across five total innings of relief.

Three members of the Sea Dogs' starting lineup went deep on Thursday. Brooks Brannon went 2 for 4 with his 13th home run of the season, two RBI, and two runs scored. Nate Baez went 1 for 3 with his ninth home run of the season, three RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Franklin Arias went 1 for 5 with his organizational-leading 18th home run of the season. Johanfran Garcia drove in one run and scored another as part of a 2-for-4 night. Caden Rose had one double, one RBI, one stolen base, and one walk.

Joe Vogatsky made his first professional start, allowing two earned runs on three hits (including one home run), no walks, and six strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. He threw 58 pitches (43 strikes) and generated 13 whiffs. Calvin Bickerstaff followed and struck out five across a career-high 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen. Steven Brooks surrendered an additional run before pitching a scoreless ninth to convert his sixth save of the year.

All but one of Greenville's starting nine recorded a hit on Thursday. Antonio Anderson went 1 for 3 with his fifth home run of the season, one RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Justin Gonzales and Stanley Tucker both homered as well, with the former crushing a solo shot and the latter launching a two-run blast. Yoeilin Cespedes, Gerardo Rodriguez, and Isaiah Jackson all doubled. Cespedes, who also drew a walk, scored on Rodriguez's two-base hit in the eighth inning.

Jacob Mayers went 3 2/3 innings in his start for Salem, allowing four earned runs on three hits (including one home run), two walks, one hit by pitch, and five strikeouts. He threw 64 pitches (34 strikes) and generated nine whiffs. Brady Tygart and Jay Allmer combined to surrender six additional runs over 3 1/3 frames, while Nicolas De La Cruz worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Adonys Guzman enjoyed a productive night at the plate, going 2 for 4 with one home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Avinson Pinto and D'Angelo Ortiz each went 2 for 5, with the former doubling for one of his two hits. Ilan Fernandez had one double as well. Skylar King scored two runs, stole one base, and drew one walk.

Jhorman Bravo led the way in this high-scoring FCL affair, going 3 for 3 with two RBI, three runs scored, six stolen bases, and one walk. Christopher Alvarado went 2 for 3 with one double, one stolen base, and one walk. Maximus Martin scored twice as part of a 2-for-4 day. Harold Rivas clubbed his fifth home run of the season for one of his two hits. Liosward Marin went 1 for 1 with two RBI, one run scored, two stolen bases, and three walks. Jhoan Peguero drove in three runs and drew one walk. Edwin Darville scored two runs, stole two bases, and drew one walk after pinch-hitting for Dorian Soto in the third inning.

Berny Ortiz got the start and went the first three innings, allowing two earned runs on no hits, five walks, and three strikeouts. Angelo Ladera, Christopher Cordero, and Denison Sanchez combined to surrender 12 additional runs in 3 1/3 total innings of relief. Sanchez was charged with both the loss and the blown save.

Player of the Day: In 25 games since being assigned from Greenville to Salem on May 26, Adonys Guzman is slashing .307/.404/.534 with eight doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI, 16 runs scored, 14 walks, and 21 strikeouts over his last 109 plate appearances. The 22-year-old catcher is in his first full professional season after being acquired from the Pirates as part of last December's Johan Oviedo trade. He is not currently ranked among the organization's top 60 prospects.
