Cup of Coffee: Casanova homers, Griman strikes out eight in DSL

7/14 Cup of Coffee:
As the dust settled from a busy draft weekend, Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 2-2 on Monday. The FCL Red Sox were held to just one hit, a Tavano Baker (pictured) single, in a shutout loss at the hands of the FCL Orioles. In Dominican Summer League action, Esterlin Casanova homered while Allan Griman struck out eight over four innings of one-run ball.

Hobie Harris continued his rehab assignment and took the loss in his start for the FCL squad. He pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits, one walk, and no strikeouts. Angelo Ladera surrendered an additional run in the second before making way for Yomar De La Rosa, who gave up two earned runs across five innings. Yander Bonaci then worked a scoreless top of the ninth. At the plate, Tavano Baker was responsible for his side's lone hit, as he went 1 for 3 with a third-inning single.

This was the completion of the game that started on July 2. Jesus Lopez went two innings in his start for the Blue squad, allowing one earned run on no hits, three walks, one hit by pitch, and two strikeouts. Jesus Martinez pitched well in relief, scattering one hit and two walks while striking out a pair across 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Offensively, Miguel Welch stole two bases, scored one run, and drew one walk as part of a 2-for-3 showing. Maikol Tovar went 1 for 3 with two RBI. Enmanuel Figuereo doubled and scored two runs.

Monday's regularly scheduled contest went better for the Blue squad. Allan Griman put forth a strong start, allowing only one earned run on one hit and one walk with a career-high eight strikeouts over four innings. Leosmar Perez gave up one run on one hit (a solo home run) across two innings, while Angel Lopez worked a scoreless seventh inning for his first professional save. At the plate, Esterlin Casanova led the way, going 1 for 2 with his third homer of the season, one RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Tovar also went 1 for 2, driving in two runs, stealing one base, and drawing one walk.

This game was called in the seventh inning due to lightning. Jhonny Osta and Lester Suarez stood out at the plate for the Red squad. Osta went 3 for 4 with one double, one RBI, and one run scored. Suarez went 2 for 4 with one triple, three RBI, and one run scored. Edgardo Gutierrez also drove in a run. On the mound, Steven Garcia went 2 1/3 innings in his start, allowing two earned runs on one hit, three walks, and three strikeouts. Dani Richar (who notched his first professional win) and Ranfi Vargas combined for 3 2/3 scoreless, no-hit frames of relief the rest of the way.

Player of the Day: Allan Griman gets the nod for his eight-strikeout performance. The 19-year-old righty now owns an 8.84 ERA with 32 strikeouts to nine walks through seven starts (18 1/3 innings) for the Blue squad this season, his second in the Dominican Summer League. He originally signed with Boston for $10,000 as an international free agent out of Venezuela last May.
