Minor Notes: Winnay promoted, Primera on fire

This week brought an end to the first half of the minor league schedule in the full season leagues, a promotion for a former local star in his first full season, and some national plaudits for a pair of the system's hottest players.

Transactions: Winnay promoted, Duffy begins rehab

Per Andrew Parker, the Red Sox will be promoting corner infielder Jack Winnay (pictured) to Double-A Portland to kick off the Sea Dogs second-half schedule on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Winnay is hitting .255/.434/457 with Greenville, leading the system with 53 walks and sharing the team lead in home runs (with three other players) with 11. Winnay has been particularly good in the last six weeks, hitting .311/.475/.615 with 10 of those 11 homers in his last 32 games. A 13th-round pick out of Wake Forest last July, Winnay will be the second member of that draft class to reach Double-A, joining Anthony Eyanson. Born in Michigan, Winnay grew up in Newton and played high school baseball at Belmont Hill.

There were several other minor league moves this week, mostly involving injuries or returns from injuries:
  • Infielder Anthony Seigler joined the major league squad on Saturday as Isiah Kiner-Falefa went on the injured list with left forearm inflammation.
  • Matt Duffy began his rehab stint in the FCL as he works his way back from 2025 Tommy John Surgery. Boston's 2023 fourth-round pick had a velocity jump during a strong 2024 campaign with Salem, posting a 2.83 ERA in 98 2/3 innings.
  • Jeremy Wu-Yelland was activated on Tuesday. He had been out since Spring Training with a lat strain.
  • Infielder Ty Hodge and pitcher Isaac Coffey were transferred to the 60-day IL with a hip flexor strain and left knee inflammation, respectively.
  • Outfielder Matt Frazier, signed in December as a minor league free agent, was activated from the 60-day IL by Portland on Wednesday.

Primera, Eyanson have up arrows

The Baseball America team came out with their list of 25 prospects who have up arrows next to their names for the first half of the 2026. Boston's representation, right-handed hurler Anthony Eyanson and catcher Franklin Primera, comes as no surprise to anyone who has been following the system.

Eyanson was totally dominant is a short stint with High A Greenville, allowing just one run in 20 1/3 innings while striking out 34 against three walks in five starts with the Drive. The LSU product has continued to thrive with Portland, posting a 1.46 ERA in 24 2/3 frames, striking out 28. His early-season surge has him up to the number-two ranking in the system.

Primera, the SoxProspects.com Player of the Week in the last two editions of this post, continues to dominate the Florida complex league. In 28 games, he is hitting .461/.581/.798 with eight home runs, leading the circuit in all three of the slash categories. During his current 16-game hitting streak (excluding Saturday's suspended game), he is an astonishing 26 for 55 with 22 runs scored and 25 RBI, with seven home runs, four doubles, and twice as many walks (eight) as strikeouts (four), adding up to a .509/.592/.964 surge. As part of the streak, Primera celebrated his 19th birthday on Tuesday, going 2 for 4 with a double.

First half complete

The minor league schedule's first half came to its conclusion this week, with Triple-A and Double-A concluding with Sundays' game, while Class-A finished, somewhat curiously, with a mid-week break after Thursday. Portland had the narrowest miss from a playoff spot, finishing in third place just four games behind Hartford in the Eastern League Northeast Division. Worcester was a respectable 36-35 in the first half but finished nine games behind Memphis (divisions are illusory in Triple-A). Greenville (26-37)  and Salem (25-40) finished 20 and 20 1/2 games back in their races.

In case you missed it, here is some of the content coming out of SoxProspects.com this week that you should make sure to be caught up on.
  • Mike and Chris connected on the podcast this week to talk about some of the players we might see promoted in the second half, and what a major league selloff might look like (and who should be responsible for it).
  • Greenville right-hander Matt McShane was featured by Andrew Parker. McShane talked about his offseason workout plan, getting comfortable with the organization, his work to add a splitter to his repertoire, and more.
  • As always, the daily Cup of Coffee keeps you filled up on all of the daily game action on the farm, and remains the best way to stay up-to-date on the system.

Where Are They Now?
  • A clip Savannah Bananas outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made the rounds doing exactly what you remember Jackie Bradley Jr. for
  • Catcher Kyle Teel, traded to the White Sox in the Garrett Crochet deal, was activated Monday, going 0 for 4. Teel had been out since suffering a hamstring injury during the World Baseball Classic.
  • Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez picked up his 100th career win for the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. 64 of those 100 came in a Red Sox uniform, and those 100 wins rank him 17th among all active players.
  • Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester, out since the start of the season, will miss the full 2026 campaign after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery on Monday.

Players of the Week June 15-21:

Tyler McDonough, Util, Worcester Red Sox
5 G, 7-17, 2 HR, 6 RBI, .412/.474/.824

A rainy week in Florida limited Franklin Primera to just three games, knocking him out of the slot that he has held the past two weeks. Veteran utilityman Tyler McDonough benefitted from that opening with a big week for Worcester. McDonough hit safely and drove in a run in each of his five starts in Allentown. He did that while filling multiple roles defensively, starting two games in left field and three at shortstop. The 2021 third-round pick has appeared in 501 games across his six seasons in the system.

Devin Futrell, LHP, Greenville Drive
1 GS, 1-0, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

Futrell had his best start since his April promotion to Greenville and arguably the best of this professional career. The 6-foot-5 lefty shut down Jersey Shore for seven innings last Tuesday, allowing just two base runners and striking out five. A 10th-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2024, Futrell has appeared in 11 games this season between Salem and Greenville. He has a 5-0 record and 3.42 ERA across 50 innings, striking out 51. He is currently ranked 58th in the system.
