Cup of Coffee: Rivas finishes double shy of cycle in FCL; Brito debuts in DSL


6/16 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 3-0 on Monday. Under the lights in Port Charlotte, Harold Rivas (pictured) and Christopher Alvarado powered the FCL Red Sox to a win over the FCL Rays. In Dominican Summer League action, Isaac Velasquez homered twice for the Blue squad, while Dawvris Brito made his highly anticipated professional debut for the Red squad.

Harold Rivas finished a double shy of the cycle, as he went 3 for 5 with one triple, one home run, one RBI, two runs scored, and one stolen base. Christopher Alvarado also homered and stole two bases on his way to going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jostin Ogando went 2 for 3 with one double, two runs scored, and one walk. Jorge Rodriguez doubled and scored one run. Franklin Primera went 1 for 4 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Dorian Soto and Justin Barry each drove in one run.

On the mound, Angelo Ladera went 3 1/3 innings in his start, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Yoandys Veraza and Merlin Bido were responsible for the next 4 2/3 innings, with each giving up one run. Yomar De La Rosa then surrendered two runs in the ninth but held on for his third save of the season.

Isaac Velasquez led the way offensively for the Blue squad, going 2 for 4 with two home runs, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Anderson Gonzalez also homered (for the first time as a professional) as part of a 3-for-4 day. Out of the leadoff spot, Miguel Welch went 3 for 5 with one RBI, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Freyerso Vasquez drove in one run, scored twice, stole one base, and drew one walk. Garielvin Silverio, Santiago Yanes, and Enmanuel Figuereo all had one RBI and one run scored.

Allan Griman got the start on the mound and went the first two innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit, four walks, one hit by pitch, and four strikeouts. Leosmar Perez earned his first win of the season out of the bullpen, as he scattered five hits, two walks, two hit by pitches, and two strikeouts across five scoreless frames of relief. Angel Lopez surrendered three runs in the eighth, while Jesus Martinez retired the only two batters he faced in the ninth to end it.

Steven Garcia secured his first professional win in his start for the Red squad, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits (including one home run), one walk, and three strikeouts over five innings. Isael Fis was tagged for three runs in the sixth, while Wascar Berroa struck out a pair in a perfect seventh inning for his first pro save.

At the plate, Joskairo Ramirez stood out by going 2 for 4 with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored. Axell Herrera and Jhonny Osta each went 2 for 4 as well, with the former driving in two runs and scoring another, and the latter scoring twice. Wilneyker Bruce tripled, plated two runs, and drew one walk. Edgardo Gutierrez scored once and drew one walk. Eliezer Alfonzo drew two walks, stole one base, and scored one run. Dawvris Brito, who had been sidelined by a left hamstring strain, went 1 for 2 with one RBI, one run scored, and one walk in his pro debut.

Player of the Day: Harold Rivas gets the nod for putting together the first three-hit game of his professional career on Monday. The 18-year-old outfielder is now slashing .253/.384/.462 with five doubles, four triples, two home runs, 12 RBIs, 26 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, 17 walks, and 32 strikeouts through 26 games (112 plate appearances) for the FCL Red Sox this season. He is currently ranked as the organization's No. 17 prospect after signing for $950,000 as an international free agent out of Venezuela last January.
