Cup of Coffee: Primera continues to tear up FCL, Bello makes first start since demotion

6/14 Cup of Coffee:
A tough Saturday across the Boston affiliates only saw one win, with it coming from the intra-squad matchup in the DSL. Brayan Bello made his first start since being demoted in Worcester. Portland's late-inning comeback fell short, and Franklin Primera (pictured) continued to hit down in the FCL.

After failing to score in the top of the tenth, Rochester managed to push across the winning run on a throwing error by Wyatt Olds off of a bunt in the bottom half of the frame. It was the first start for Brayan Bello since being demoted from Boston. In four innings, the right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and five strikeouts. He also did not walk a batter over 76 pitches. Following Bello, the trio of Eduardo Rivera, Alec Gamboa and Joe La Sorsa combined for four shutout frames to send the game to extras.

All of the runs prior to extras were scored by the fifth inning as Matt Lloyd homered in the top of the third and Max Ferguson drove in Lloyd on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Lloyd added a double along with his homer as part of a 2 for 4 outing. Tsung-Che Cheng also had two hits and Kristian Campbell roped his ninth double of the season.

Portland entered the ninth inning trailing by two runs and managed to get the tying run to second base but Marvin Alcantara grounded into a double play to end the game. The Sea Dogs scattered six hits across the game including three in the ninth but went just 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position. Portland's two runs came from a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ahbram Liendo and a run-scoring single in the ninth by Brooks Brannon. Miguel Bleis led the Sea Dog offense with a pair of hits including his seventh double of the season.

Gage Ziehl pitched well in his start, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Over his last 15 innings, the right-hander has allowed just three runs. Jedixson Paez took the loss in bulk relief following Ziehl. Despite pitching well over three innings, he allowed a pair of runs in the seventh to put Portland behind for good.

Greenville jumped out to a 4-2 lead after four innings thanks to RBIs from Isaiah Jackson, Jack Winnay, Mason White, and Yophery Rodriguez. Greenville fell behind after Ben Hansen surrendered the lead with three runs in the fifth to put the Drive behind 5-4. Greenville waited until the bottom of the ninth before knotting the score as a wild pitch plated Enddy Azocar, who singled and advanced to third on a single by Justin Gonzales. Greenville failed to win the game in the 10th and tie the game in the 11th as they look to win the series on Sunday.

Winnay, Gonzales, and Luke Heyman led the Drive in the batter's box with two hits apiece. Gonzales also added his third stolen base of the season. Danny Kirwin was charged with the loss after allowing the two runs in the extra frame.

Salem carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning but Adam Bates surrendered a pair of runs in what ended up being the final score. Bates took the loss with those two runs allowed over the two innings he pitched in. He also walked two and struck out a pair. Salem trailed 2-0 for part of the game before Anderson Fermin doubled home a run in the fifth and a Ilan Fernandez forceout followed by a throwing error allowed two more runs to score. Kleyver Salazar, Adonys Guzman, Avinson Pinto, and Andruw Musett each recorded a pair of hits in what was a 10-hit effort for the Salem offense.

Jacob Mayers was the star on the mound in relief of Brady Tygart, who earned the start. Mayers struck out nine over 3 2/3 innings. The ninth-round pick in last year's draft lowered his ERA to 2.51 over 32 1/3 frames in 2026.

The FCL squad fell behind 4-0 after four innings and couldn't recover on its way to the loss. Jakson Gamboa struggled to find his command as he took the loss in his three innings of work. The right-hander only gave up a single hit, but he walked four and allowed two runs (one earned run) with five strikeouts. Carter Rasmussen's struggles on the mound continued as he followed Gamboa with six walks in two innings in which he allowed four runs.

Despite the loss, Franklin Primera continued to tear apart Complex League pitching. The catcher went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to push his season stat line to .458/.596/.778 in 24 games this season. He also has six home runs, 21 RBIs and a 21:10 walk-to-strikeout ratio. Dorian Soto walked twice and Christopher Alvarado reached base twice with a walk and a double.

Team Red slugged 20 hits and included a 10-run sixth inning to power the squad in an intra-affiliate matchup. Eight of the starting nine recorded at least one hit with six players registering multiple knocks. Among the offensive outburst, Wilneyker Bruce led the way with a 4-for-5 outing with a two-run home run to go along with his four RBIs. Edgardo Gutierrez powered his third home run of the season, Anderber Urbina drove in four runs himself while Axell Herrera and Adrian Valdez had two-RBI games each. On the mound, Anthony Herrera picked up the win, holding Team Red scoreless over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six, walked three, and allowed one hit.

On Team Red's side, Garielvin Silverio, SoxProspects' 29th-ranked prospect in the system, hit his first professional home run in the first inning. Enmanuel Figuereo was the only hitter with two hits in the contest.

Player of the Day: In what has been a season of high praise, Franklin Primera adds onto the accolades with another Player of the Day nod. The backstop has been nothing short of spectacular in his time at the complex this season. The combination of power as well as control of the strike zone has made him an intriguing prospect to pay attention to as the season progresses.
