Cup of Coffee: Futrell strikes out twelve; Winnay makes Portland debut
6/24 Cup of Coffee: It was a quiet night for the bats throughout the system, as only two Red Sox affiliates came away with wins on Tuesday. Patrick Sandoval continued his rehab assignment in a loss for the WooSox and Jack Winnay reached base twice in his Portland debut. Devin Futrell (pictured) was phenomenal in a shutout win for the Drive as he struck out 12 batters. Down in the DSL, Isaac Velasquez headlined the day with a pinch-hit walkoff grand slam.

Patrick Sandoval made the third start of his rehab assignment, building up to 53 pitches through 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday night. Sandoval allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, striking out one batter. Seth Martinez followed him with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Noah Song was touched up for two runs in an inning before Zack Kelly and Angel Bastardo combined for three shutout innings of relief to finish out the game. The WooSox scored their only run on an RBI groundout for Jason Delay in the third inning. Tsung-Che Cheng went 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.

The Sea Dogs dropped their series opener despite Franklin Arias's best efforts, as the system's top prospect went 3 for 5 and drove in Portland's first run of the game on a second-inning single. Johanfran Garcia was the only other Sea Dog to record multiple hits, going 2 for 5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Jack Winnay made his debut at the Double-A level and reached base twice, going 0 for 3 with two walks. Dalton Rogers tossed five innings for the Sea Dogs, allowing four runs on five hits while fanning five hitters. Caleb Bolden surrendered three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief and Patrick Halligan struck out four in 1 2/3 shutout innings.

Devin Futrell was electric on Tuesday night, as he struck out a career-high 12 batters through six scoreless frames as he led Greenville to a shutout win. Greenville's bullpen was locked in as well, as Tyler Davis struck out three batters in 1 2/3 shutout innings and Steven Brooks threw a scoreless 1 1/3 innings in relief. Greenville got off to an early lead on an RBI single off the bat of Justin Gonzales in the third inning. Gonzales went 1 for 2 with two walks on the night. Luke Heyman added another run with a solo home run in the fourth, his 10th of the season between Greenville and Salem.

The RidgeYaks bats were unable to generate much offense in the opening game of their series against Myrtle Beach. Salem scored their first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adonys Guzman in the sixth inning and picked up another run on a solo home run for Skylar King, his eighth of the season. Avinson Pinto was the only RidgeYak with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a walk. Barrett Morgan tossed the first three innings for Salem, allowing two runs while striking out four. Jay Allmer and Harry Blum were both hit hard out of the bullpen, allowing a run in an inning and a three runs in 2 1/3 innings, respectively. Adam Bates punched out four batters and allowed a run in 2 1/3 innings.

The FCL Sox delivered an impressive offensive performance but were unable to hang onto the win, falling in a walkoff loss to the Orioles. Left fielder Tavano Baker had a huge game, going 3 for 4 while ripping two doubles and a triple. Edwin Darville also collected three hits, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Franklin Primera continued his torrid stretch, extending his hitting streak to 17 games with a sixth-inning single. Sadbiel Delzine opened the game with 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while walking three batters to raise his ERA to 2.64 through 30 2/3 innings in the FCL. Juanyerlin Duran and Merlin Bido each allowed three runs in relief and Yomar De La Rosa gave up one unearned run in 1/3 of an inning.

The DSL Blue team took the win in thrilling fashion on Tuesday afternoon. Losing 7-6 with two outs in the ninth inning, they loaded the bases before Isaac Velasquez entered the game as a pinch-hitter and promptly launched a walkoff grand slam to send the Red Sox Blue home with a win. Velasquez came into the game to replace third baseman Luis Aular, who had an excellent game in his own right, going 1 for 1 with three walks and two RBI.
Christopher Silvestre started on the mound and threw two scoreless innings, walking two batters and striking out one. Hicter Ruiz struggled in relief, surrendering five runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 frames. Angel Lopez tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings before Charlie Zink walked four batters and allowed two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jainer Almanza picked up the win with a shutout 1 1/3 innings.

The Red squad was completely blanked, recording only three hits on singles by Dawvris Brito, Joskairo Ramirez, and Lester Suarez en route to a shutout loss. Starting pitcher Oscar Vaamonde tossed the first four innings of the game, struggling with his control as he walked four batters and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. Robert Moreno fired two scoreless innings of relief, walking two and fanning two batters.

Player of the Day: For his second consecutive start, Devin Futrell earned SoxProspects.com Player of the Day honors as Futrell came through with the best start of his professional career on Tuesday night. Futrell was lights out through six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out 12 batters and generating 18 swings and misses. In 47 innings since being promoted to Greenville, Futrell has pitched to a 3.64 ERA and struck out 53 batters.
