Cup of Coffee: Brito stays hot, Primera extends hitting streak to 16 games in FCL

6/23 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 1-3 on Monday. Josue Brito (pictured) reached base three times, while Franklin Primera extended his hitting streak as the FCL Red Sox defeated the FCL Pirates in Bradenton. In the Dominican Summer League, Esterlin Casanova and Adrian Valdez hit their first professional home runs as the Blue and Red squads dropped a total of three games.

Josue Brito led the way offensively, going 3 for 5 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored. Franklin Primera and Harold Rivas recorded multiple hits as well, with the former singling twice to extend his hitting streak to 16 games and the latter scoring once. Dorian Soto tripled, drove in two runs, and scored another. Christopher Alvarado went 1 for 3 with one RBI, one stolen base, and one walk. Jhorman Bravo went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and one stolen base before being replaced defensively at third base by Edwin Darville in the seventh inning. Tavano Baker and Alexander Mambel also drove in runs.

Angelo Ladera got the start and went the first three innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. Yoandys Veraza issued six walks and surrendered two earned runs in his 1 2/3 innings of work, while Denison Sanchez (who was ultimately credited with the winning decision), Yoelvin Chirino, and Yander Bonaci combined for 4 1/3 scoreless frames of relief to wrap things up.

Esterlin Casanova provided the biggest hit of the day for the Blue squad, going 1 for 4 with a ninth-inning solo shot to mark his first professional home run. Kevin Morillo singled twice, while Santiago Yanes and Isaac Velasquez accounted for three walks and two runs scored. On the mound, Allan Griman took the loss in his start, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, one walk, and six strikeouts over four innings. Leosmar Perez went the next four innings and surrendered four additional runs (three earned), while Michal Manjarres struck out three in a scoreless top of the ninth.

This game began on June 12 but was suspended in the fifth inning due to lightning. Adrian Valdez ended up providing the Red squad's lone hit, as he went 1 for 2 with a walk and a two-run home run to mark his first professional round-tripper. Anderber Urbina and Eliezer Alfonzo each drew one walk and scored one run. On the flip side, Maikel Vargas went three innings in his start, allowing three earned runs on two hits, five walks, two hit by pitches, and two strikeouts. Harry Canedo and Alexander Heredia combined for three scoreless frames of relief. Yariel Valdez was saddled with the loss after giving up the winning run on a walk-off single in the seventh.

Monday's regularly scheduled contest between these two teams was another sleepy affair for the Red squad. Joskairo Ramirez stood out by going 2 for 3 with one stolen base. Gustavo Antunez doubled for his only hit. On the mound, Dani Richar went one-plus innings in his start, allowing one earned run on one hit, two walks, and no strikeouts. Steven Garcia and Wascar Berroa combined to surrender five additional runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings of relief, while Isael Fis retired the only two batters he faced.

Player of the Day: Josue Brito gets the nod for putting together his first three-hit game of 2026. In 11 games for the FCL Red Sox this month, the 19-year-old first baseman/outfielder is slashing .355/.523/.677 with five doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBIs, nine runs scored, three stolen bases, eight walks, and 12 strikeouts. Originally signed for $20,000 out of Venezuela in January 2024, Brito is making his stateside debut this season after repeating the Dominican Summer League in 2025 and earning Boston's Latin Program Position Player of the Year honors. He is not currently ranked among the organization's top 60 prospects.
