Cup of Coffee: Baker, Brito lead FCL Red Sox to win; Casanova, Urbina homer in DSL


6/30 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 1-2 on Monday. In the Florida Complex League, Tavano Baker (pictured) and reigning Player of the Week Josue Brito propelled the FCL Red Sox to a win. In the Dominican Summer League, Esterlin Casanova and Anderber Urbina homered as the Blue and Red squads both lost.

Tavano Baker led the way offensively, going 2 for 3 with one double, his first home run of the season, two RBIs, two runs scored, and one walk. Josue Brito, fresh off being named FCL Player of the Week, went 1 for 2 with one double, two RBIs, one run scored, and two walks out of the leadoff spot. Jorge Rodriguez also doubled, drove in one run, scored another, and drew one walk. Harold Rivas singled and scored one run before coming out of the game in the fourth inning for Jhoan Peguero, who drew one walk, stole one base, and scored one run in his place. Jhorman Bravo, Dorian Soto, and Jostin Ogando all went 1 for 4. Bravo had recorded one RBI, one run, one stolen base, and one walk. Soto recorded one RBI, one run, and one walk. Ogando recorded one RBI and two runs.

On the mound, Angelo Ladera got the start and went 1 2/3 innings, allowing five unearned runs on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Yoandys Veraza and Yoelvin Chirino put up similar lines out of the bullpen, as both gave up one unearned run over two innings. Merlin Bido picked up the winning decision despite surrendering two earned runs across 2 1/3 innings of work. Yander Bonaci, meanwhile, yielded another run in the ninth but held on for the save.

Allan Griman pitched well in his start for the Blue squad, allowing only one earned run on four hits, no walks, and five strikeouts over three innings. Charlie Zink added a scoreless frame out of the bullpen, while Leosmar Perez and Jainer Almanza combined to surrender five runs in four total innings of relief. At the plate, Kevin Morillo went 2 for 3 with one double and two RBIs. Miguel Welch and Garielvin Silverio each went 2 for 4, with the former stealing one base. Eber Miranda doubled and scored one run. Esterlin Casanova went 1 for 4 with a solo home run, his second of the year.

Anderber Urbina homered for the second time this season as part of a 1-for-3 day at the plate in which he drove in two runs, stole one base, and drew one walk. Jhonny Osta also recorded two RBIs. Joskairo Ramirez drove in one run, scored another, stole one base, and drew one walk. Geomaikel Martinez stole two bases, adding an RBI and a run. Dawvris Brito drew two walks, stole his first professional base, and scored one run. On the mound, Steven Garcia got the start for the Red squad and went three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, four walks, and three strikeouts. Four different relievers combined to give up six additional runs (four earned) across six innings out of the bullpen.

Player of the Day: Tavano Baker gets the nod for hitting his first home run of the Florida Complex League season on Monday. The 19-year-old outfielder is now batting .240/.350/.460 with four doubles, two triples, one homer, 10 RBIs, 14 runs scored, five stolen bases, eight walks, and 12 strikeouts through 15 games for the FCL Red Sox this month. He originally signed for $200,000 as an international free agent out of the Bahamas in January 2024 and is not ranked among the organization's top 60 prospects.
