Cup of Coffee: Garcia delivers a walk-off single; Witherspoon bounces back

5/25 Cup of Coffee
: In the midst of a five-game losing streak, Worcester got rained out on Sunday. Portland won on a walk-off hit from Johanfran Garcia, while Kyson Witherspoon turned things around in Greenville.

Sunday's game got postponed, but no makeup date has been scheduled. There is a chance the game is played in Rochester in the series that starts on June 9.

An RBI triple from Franklin Arias tied the game in the 10th, and Johanfran Garcia won it with a walk-off single. Arias finished 2 for 5, while Ronald Rosario went 2 for 4 with a double and his second home run. Garcia went 2 for 5 and ended the series going 7 for 19 with a home run. Starter Gage Ziehl allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings but walked four while striking out four. Patrick Halligan stayed hot with his fourth straight scoreless appearance, blanking Reading over 3 1/3 innings. The win went to Cooper Adams as he allowed just an unearned run over the final two frames.

-----

The Drive had the bases loaded with two outs in the final inning, but Isaiah Jackson popped out to end it. Jackson had a single and a solo home run prior to making the last out. Jack Winnay went 1 for 3 with a walk, and Adonys Guzman went 2 for 2 with a walk. Pitching for the first time in almost two weeks, Kyson Witherspoon had a bounce back outing. He struck out six and walked two over 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball. The loss went to a rehabbing Osvaldo Berrios who allowed two runs while recording five outs.

It was another tough loss for Greenville in the makeup game, as they went up by two runs in extra innings only to give up three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Starter Alex Bouchard limited the Keys to two runs on one hit over 5 1/3 frames, but Brandon Neely took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) over two innings. Yoeilin Cespedes extended his hitting streak to five games by going 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. Yophery Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a double, and Justin Gonzales went 1 for 4 and scored two runs.

Seven members of Salem's lineup had at least one hit as they trounced the Howlers. Stanley Tucker led the way, going 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Avinson Pinto doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Skylar King went 1 for 4 with a walk and two steals. Cole Tolbert struck out four and allowed one run over four frames, and Jacob Mayers allowed one run despite not allowing a hit over 3 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two.

Player of the Day: While not the best statistical performance of the day, Johanfran Garcia's walk-off single was the highlight on Sunday. Garcia has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, and has an impressive line of .295/.348/.557 so far in May. That does come with a 27 percent strikeout rate and just a four percent walk rate, but the 21-year-old is in the midst of his best stretch since April 2024 prior to tearing two ligaments in his knee.
