Cup of Coffee: Anderson, four other Worcester pitchers toss one-hitter

5/29 Cup of Coffee:
Thursday's slate featured three games that were decided by one run. Jack Anderson (pictured) and Anthony Seigler led Worcester to a shutout win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Marvin Alcantara and Brooks Brannon were among the offensive standouts in Portland's shootout win over Binghamton. Natanael Yuten scored on a wild pitch in extras to lift Greenville over Asheville. Frederik Jimenez doubled and homered in Salem's loss to Hickory.

Jack Anderson put together a strong start for Worcester, allowing only one hit and no walks while striking out a career-high of eight over 4 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old righty retired the first 13 batters he faced before giving up a one-out single in the fifth. He finished with 74 pitches (51 strikes), generating 12 whiffs. Seth Martinez, Kyle Keller, Wyatt Olds, and Tommy Kahnle combined for 4 1/3 scoreless, no-hit frames of relief to seal the shutout. Martinez was credited with the winning decision, while Kahnle secured the save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Anthony Seigler provided the biggest hit of the night, going 1 for 4 with a first-inning solo home run off top Yankees pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange for his third big fly of the year. Worcester's only other extra-base hits belonged to Nate Eaton and Jason Delay, who both doubled for their only knocks of the night.

A high-scoring affair ended in winning fashion for Portland. Marvin Alcantara stood out, going 2 for 5 with one double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Brooks Brannon also went 2 for 5, adding two RBI of his own and one run. Johanfran Garcia clubbed a two-run blast for his lone hit of the night and eighth home run of the season. Nelly Taylor, Caden Rose, and Ahbram Liendo each went 1 for 3. Taylor doubled, scored one run, and stole one base. Rose scored one run, stole one base, and drew one walk. Liendo scored one run. Tyler McDonough went 1 for 4 with one double, one RBI, one stolen base, and one walk. Will Turner drew two walks, drove in one run, and scored twice. Nate Baez drove in one run as well.

On the mound, John Holobetz went 3 1/3 innings in his start, allowing five earned runs on six hits (including one home run), two walks, and four strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches (47 strikes) and generated eight whiffs. Patrick Halligan surrendered four additional runs, while Cooper Adams and Joe Vogatsky combined for six strikeouts over four scoreless, one-hit frames of relief to end it. Adams notched the win, while Vogatsky was credited with the save.

Devin Futrell went five innings in his start for Greenville, allowing two earned runs on three hits (including two home runs), no walks, and six strikeouts. He threw 75 pitches (50 strikes) and generated 13 whiffs. Ben Hansen and Brandon Neely combined for four more strikeouts over five scoreless, one-hit frames out of the bullpen. Neely, who stranded the automatic runner in the 10th, took home the winning decision.

Offensively, three runs on four hits were enough for the Drive. Freili Encarnacion accounted for half of those hits, going 2 for 3 with one double and one walk. Henry Godbout and Mason White both doubled as well, with the former adding one run and two walks and the latter scoring once. Luke Heyman drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and was at the plate when Natanael Yuten scored the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th.

Jason Gilman went 3 2/3 innings and took the loss in his start for Salem, surrendering four earned runs on five hits (including two home runs), two walks, and four strikeouts. He threw 72 pitches (47 strikes) and generated 11 whiffs. Calvin Bickerstaff and Nicolas De La Cruz combined to allow three additional runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings of relief.

At the plate, Frederik Jimenez led the way, going 2 for 3 with one double, his second home run of the season, two RBIs, one run scored, and one walk. Andrews Opata went 2 for 4 with an RBI single. Starlyn Nunez, Skylar King, and Adonys Guzman all doubled for their only hits. Nunez scored one run, while Guzman scored one run and drew one walk.

Berny Ortiz got the start and suffered his first loss of the season, allowing one earned run on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts over three innings. Denison Sanchez struck out a pair in three scoreless, no-hit frames of relief. Offensively, Franklin Primera drove in his side's lone run, going 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Dorian Soto. Jostin Ogando drew two walks.

Player of the Day: Jack Anderson gets the nod for flirting with perfection. After making his big league debut in April, the right-hander has had a rough time of things since returning to Worcester. He had allowed 14 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings (11.12 ERA) this month before breaking out with a stellar outing on Thursday night. A former minor league Rule 5 Draft pickup, Anderson is currently ranked as the organization's No. 54 prospect.
