Fall/Winter League Roundup: 40-man roster deadline comes and goes, several farmhands playing in Winter Leagues


With the Arizona Fall League in the books, a trio of Winter leagues have featured Boston prospects. During the week, the Red Sox set their 40-man roster in place ahead of the Rule 5 Draft by selecting the contracts of three prospect pitchers. 40-man roster decisions finalized
On Wednesday, the deadline for 40-man roster protection before the Rule 5 Draft came and went, and the Red Sox made a flurry of moves to both free up spots as well as add new names to the roster. Pitchers David Sandlin, Shane Drohan, and Tyler Uberstine were all added to the 40-man while four trades and a pair of DFAs were made as corresponding moves. Dominican Professional Baseball League 
Catcher Ronaldo Hernandez has looked good across 20 games for Toros del Este. In 64 plate appearances, the 27-year-old backstop has registered a .730 OPS with a home run and 10 RBI, as well as six walks. Hernandez played in 30 games in 2025 between Portland and Worcester following his return to the organization.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Right-hander Eybersson Polanco has had a strong showing in his eight appearances for Aguilas del Zulia. Across 13 2/3 innings, the 21-year-old has pitched to a 2.63 ERA with 11 strikeouts while also walking seven batters. After returning to the mound in 2025 after missing the year prior with injuries, Polanco appeared in 36 games for Salem with a 5.23 ERA. 

On the hitter side, Juan Montero has had a cup of coffee with Leones de Ponce, appearing in a pair of games while drawing a walk in three plate appearances.

Puerto Rican Winter League 
Wyatt Olds has struggled with Criollos de Caguas over his first six appearances. In 5 1/3 innings, the right-hander has a 10.13 ERA with six hits and six walks allowed while also striking out eight. Olds split his 2025 season with Portland and Worcester, tossing 71 1/3 frames with a 5.05 ERA. 

Osvaldo Berrios, one of the newest members of the Boston organization, has seen some time with Gigantes de Carolina this winter. Berrios has struck out 10 hitters across six innings with two runs and three walks added to his line so far. Berrios inked a Minor League contract with Boston on November 17 after two seasons in the Cardinals organization. In 2025, Berrios recorded a 5.12 ERA over 58 frames between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. 

Along with Olds and Berrios, Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted at a third member of the organization joining the Puerto Rican league. While on the Section 10 Podcast this week, Cora teased that Kristian Campbell may head to Puerto Rico for some live game action, joining Criollos de Caguas, led by current Boston bench coach Ramon Vazquez.
