Cup of Coffee: Senga stymies WooSox

9/13 Cup of Coffee:
It was a Central New York sweep of the Sox affiliates on Friday night. Portland dropped a walk-off in Binghamton despite a 10-hit effort. About 60 miles up I-81, Worcester was shut down by a Syracuse three-hitter.

Worcester managed just three hits off veteran hurler Kodai Senga and a pair of relievers, none after the fourth inning. The WooSox actually held an early lead when a Max Ferguson double plated Jhostynxon Garcia in the second. Abraham Toro led off the fourth with a single but was quickly erased on a double play, and the WooSox did not have another baserunner until a ninth-inning Chadwick Tromp walk. Jack Anderson turned in a solid start, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out seven while walking only one. Wyatt Olds surrendered a run in two innings before Nick Burdi fired a scoreless eighth.

Portland dropped a back-and-forth contest as Binghamton walked it off in the ninth. Marvin Alcantara was 2 for 5 with a double that gave Portland a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Juan Chacon (pictured) and Ahbram Liendo turned in matching 2-for-4 lines. Both scored a run, and Chacon added a double. Starter Caleb Bolden allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. Jeremy Wu-Yelland surrendered two runs, one coming on a solo homer, as part of a game-tying rally in the seventh. Adam Smith fired a scoreless eighth, but an unearned run in the ninth handed him the loss.

Player of the Day: Juan Chacon struggled mightily in the first half of the year, but has been a key contributor for the Sea Dogs over the past six weeks. Since his activation on August 3, he is hitting .328/.425/.448 with six doubles in 23 games. Since receiving Boston's top bonus in the July 2019 international amateur class, Chacon has appeared in 288 games.
