Cup of Coffee: Rivera tosses six shutout innings; Portland eliminated from playoffs

9/10 Cup of Coffee:
Both of the remaining active Red Sox affiliates lost in low-scoring games on Tuesday night. The Sea Dogs were eliminated from postseason contention with a loss to Binghamton despite six excellent innings from Eduardo Rivera (pictured). Worcester also lost a close game, which was highlighted by five solid innings from Jose De Leon and an RBI triple for Seby Zavala

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, catcher Seby Zavala put the WooSox on the board with an RBI triple in the third inning and then came around to score on a wild pitch. Corey Rosier was 1 for 3 and scored Worcester's other run. Jose De Leon tossed five innings, striking out seven batters while allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. The Worcester bullpen was excellent, as Wyatt Olds, Jovani Moran, and Nick Burdi each threw a scoreless frame, but the WooSox bats could not muster another rally after the third inning.

The Sea Dogs also fell in a pitchers' duel on Tuesday night, as both Portland and Binghamton were scoreless when Rumble Ponies' right fielder Nick Morabito delivered a walkoff single in the ninth inning. Starting pitcher Eduardo Rivera was outstanding over six shutout innings, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out seven. Jeremy Wu-Yelland followed him with four strikeouts in two shutout innings before Jorge Juan allowed the winning run to cross the plate in 1/3 of an inning. Franklin Arias was 1 for 4 with a double.

Player of the Day: He didn't receive much in the way of run support but Eduardo Rivera was lights out on Tuesday. His six scoreless innings lowered his ERA to 3.40 in 42 1/3 innings since being promoted to Portland. Rivera ranks as the 29th prospect in the organization.
