Cup of Coffee: Futrell fires five shutout innings, White picks up four hits
9/4 Cup of Coffee: Greenville was the only affiliate to win last night, and they did so behind another very strong start from Devin Futrell (pictured). The bullpen was also terrific, and Mason White had a huge game offensively. Franklin Arias also picked up his first multi-hit game with the Sea Dogs.

It was a tough night for the offense against 37-year-old veteran Kenta Maeda, as they managed just one hit all game. The lone knock was a solo shot off the bat of Nathan Hickey in the eighth inning. The first baseman now has 14 long balls on the season. Kristian Campbell played center field and went 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Jose De Leon had another tough outing, surrendering four earned runs on five hits and four walks in 4 2/3 frames. On the positive side, he punched out seven. David Sandlin tossed 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball with one strikeout and no walks. Chris Murphy threw a perfect inning on just 10 pitches, including a pair of strikeouts. Isaac Coffey was missing plenty of bats in his two innings of work, with four strikeouts and no free passes. He gave up one run on a solo home run.

Franklin Arias picked up two hits in his second game with Portland, going 2 for 5 with two singles and an RBI. Allan Castro and Marvin Alcantara each went 2 for 5 with an RBI as well, with Castro roping his 19th double. Ronaldo Hernandez added a double and a run scored. Eduardo Rivera labored through 3 1/3 innings, throwing 81 pitches and allowing four runs (three earned). He walked four and did not strike anybody out. Jonathan Brand came on and struggled as well, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits in 1 2/3 innings and striking out a pair. Jeremy Wu-Yelland fired two shutout innings without allowing a hit and striking out four. Zach Bryant struck out two and did not walk anybody over two innings, but he gave up three runs and two home runs. They're now 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.

Devin Futrell continued his incredible season with five more shutout innings. He only allowed two hits, did not walk anybody, and struck out five. His ERA is now 1.09 in five starts with Greenville. Adam Smith followed and was just as dominant, firing three scoreless innings with no hits allowed. He also struck out five and only issued one free pass. Isaac Stebens tossed a shutout inning of his own as well. Mason White had himself a night at the plate, going 4 for 4 with four singles, a walk, a stolen base, a run, and an RBI. Maximus Martin went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI, while Nelly Taylor doubled, walked, scored, and drove in a run. Justin Gonzales also went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs. They remain two games out of a playoff spot.

Alex Bouchard started this one on the mound for Salem and went the first 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander surrendered two runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks, and one strikeout. Adam Bates struggled in relief, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits. He walked three and punched out five. The Salem offense only had four hits and went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. Frederik Jimenez had a good night, going 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI. Yoeilin Cespedes added a single, a walk, and a run scored.

Player of the Day: Mason White was perfect with four hits and a walk last night. It was the first time in his young professional career with more than two hits in a game. Drafted in the fourth round this past July, White is hitting .233 with five doubles and three stolen bases in 22 games with Greenville and Salem.
