Cup of Coffee: Ruiz delivers scoreless start in FCL; Griman lights out in relief in DSL

7/16 Cup of Coffee:
It was another quiet night in the Red Sox system, as the four full-season affiliates are all off until Friday for the All-Star break. The FCL Red Sox played a doubleheader, losing the first game in a rout. Yermain Ruiz (pictured) started the second game with an excellent pitching performance but the game was suspended with a 3-3 tie in the seventh. Both DSL teams won, headlined by a big game for the Blue team's lineup and a dominant relief outing by Allan Griman.

Jesus Travieso, who had been scheduled to start Monday's game before it was rained out, threw the first 2 1/3 innings in Game 1 of the doubleheader. He allowed one run despite not allowing a hit and punched out four batters while walking two. Jose Bello piggybacked Travieso with 3 2/3 innings of relief and struggled, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. While Bello was hit hard on Tuesday, he did strike out five and walked only one batter. Jeison Payano allowed an unearned run in an inning of relief, striking out two and walking two. The Red Sox bats were unable to generate much offense, collecting only two hits the entire game off the bats of Anderson Fermin and Jesus Lugo. Lugo scored their only run of the game, tripling to lead off the seventh and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Fermin.

The Red Sox narrowly avoided being swept in the doubleheader, rallying to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the top of the seventh before the game was suspended. Edwin Brito led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Alexander Mambel. Second baseman Justin Barry tied the game with an RBI single of his own. Barry was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs on the day, as he also collected an RBI double in the fifth. Prior to the lineup's late heroics, Yermain Ruiz had stolen the show with an excellent performance on the mound. Ruiz threw 4 2/3 shutout innings to begin the game, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four. Merlin Bido allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings of relief, walking three and allowing three hits.

Six players recorded multiple hits in a great showing for the Blue squad bats. Leadoff hitter Harold Rivas set the tone for the lineup, going 2 for 5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Edwin Darville was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Right fielder Enmanuel Figuereo was also 2 for 5 with a double, as well as a run and an RBI. Jostin Ogando, Vladimir Asencio, and Maikol Tovar each had two hits. Juan Medina struggled with his control in a shaky performance on the mound. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks and did not strike out a batter. Yomar De La Rosa turned in 3 2/3 strong innings of relief, striking out three batters while allowing one run on three hits and a walk. Yariel Valdez gave up a run in an inning of relief.

With a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning, Geomaikel Martinez helped to put the Red team ahead for good as he drove a two-run triple to left field and then came around to score on an RBI double by Miguel Welch. Martinez was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored. Third baseman Luis Aular was 1 for 2 with a walk and a two-run double in the second inning. Yohandry Gonzalez allowed a run in two innings to open the game, striking out four and walking one. Eddison Septimo walked two batters and allowed a run in 2/3 innings. Allan Griman was dominant in three scoreless innings of relief, earning the win and striking out six batters. The only baserunner he allowed was a hit batter, as he allowed no hits or walks. Jose Golindano surrendered two unearned runs, striking out four batters and walking two in 1 1/3 innings.

Player of the Day: Allan Griman was outstanding in a three-inning relief appearance on Tuesday. Griman struck out six batters and was nearly perfect, retiring the first eight hitters he faced before hitting a batter. Through 16 innings in the DSL this season, he has a 1.13 ERA and has allowed only six hits (.115 batting average against). He has had some trouble with his control, walking 11 batters in 13 innings prior to this game, but he was absolutely in command in an impressive outing on Tuesday.
