Cup of Coffee: Bello, Rodriguez highlight strong day for pitching in FCL

7/8 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's rookie-level affiliates went 3-1 on a Monday in which five games were scheduled. Behind solid pitching from the likes of Jose Bello and Wuilliams Rodriguez (pictured), the FCL Red Sox swept the FCL Rays in a doubleheader. Both Dominican Summer League squads, on the other hand, were affected by the weather.

This game began on July 3 but was suspended in the third inning due to rain. After Dalvinson Reyes struck out three over two scoreless, no-hit innings in his start last Thursday, Jesus Travieso, Tejahari Wilson, and Yoandys Veraza combined to allow just two hits across seven shutout frames of relief on Monday. Offensively, Franyer Noria went 3 for 3 with one run scored, one walk, and one stolen base out of the nine-hole. Batting in front of him, Justin Barry crushed a two-run shot for his third home run of the season, scored twice, and stole two bases as part of a 1-for-4 showing.

This was Monday's regularly scheduled contest. Jose Bello pitched well yet again in his start, allowing one earned run on three hits, one walk, and four strikeouts over three innings. Fellow righty Wuilliams Rodriguez secured the win out of the bullpen after giving up two earned runs on four hits, no walks, and three strikeouts across four innings. At the plate, Anderson Fermin had an interesting afternoon by going 0 for 1 with one RBI, two runs scored, three walks, and one stolen base. Gerardo Rodriguez, Yan Cruz, and D'Angelo Ortiz each drove in one run as well, while Edwin Brito knocked in a pair.

This game was called in the top of the sixth due to inclement weather. After Dani Richar allowed two runs in the first inning, Wascar Berroa earned the first win of his professional career by scattering one hit, one walk, one hit by pitch, and five strikeouts over three scoreless frames of relief. Yander Bonaci put up a zero in the fifth as well. Offensively, Jostin Ogando led the way by going 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Edwin Darville went 2 for 3 with one double, one RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Maikol Tovar scored two runs, drew one walk, and stole one base as part of a 2-for-2 day. Enmanuel Figuero also scored twice.

This game began on June 16 but was suspended in the top of the fourth due to lightning. Berny Ortiz, who originally started the contest for the Red squad last month, retook the mound on Monday and technically went the distance. In seven total innings of work, the 19-year-old righty allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, five walks, one hit by pitch, and seven strikeouts. At the plate, the Red squad was held to just two hits (both singles) as a team. Geomaikel Martinez went 1 for 2 with one RBI and one walk. Gustavo Antunez singled, scored one run, and drew one walk. Kenyon Simmons also drove in one run.

Monday's regularly scheduled contest was suspended in the bottom of the third due to rain. Charlie Zink, making his season debut, surrendered four earned runs on one hit, three walks, two hit by pitches, and no strikeouts in the first inning. Jose Golindano allowed two runs on four hits in the second. Offensively, Antunez, Givian Sirvania, and Alexander Alzi had accounted for the Red squad's three hits. Martinez had drawn one walk, stolen one base, and scored his side's lone run.

Player of the Day: Wuilliams Rodriguez gets the nod for picking up the winning decision out of the bullpen on Monday. The 19-year-old righty from Venezuela is now 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the FCL Red Sox this season. He has recorded 26 strikeouts and has issued nine walks over 32 2/3 innings in which opposing hitters have batted .213 against him.
