Cup of Coffee: Zanetello homers twice for Drive; Delzine debuts in DSL

6/4 Cup of Coffee:
It was the first full slate of the season, as all seven of Boston's minor league affiliates played on Tuesday. Roman Anthony and Ryan Noda homered in a thrilling walkoff win for the WooSox. Allan Castro and Max Ferguson led the Sea Dogs to victory with home runs in Portland. Nazzan Zanetello's (pictured) two-homer day highlighted a win for Greenville and Salem rode strong performances by Enddy Azocar, Justin Gonzalez, and Frederik Jimenez to the win. The FCL Red Sox bats delivered a sizzling performance, scoring 15 runs in an offensive explosion. While both DSL teams lost on Tuesday, there was still reason for excitement as Sadbiel Delzine started and made his debut in the Red Sox organization.

The WooSox strung together an exciting tenth-inning rally to walk off Rochester in their series opener. Down 5-3 in the 10th inning, Ryan Noda tied the game with a two-run homer to center field. The WooSox then scored the winning run on a throwing error by Red Wings catcher Drew Millas following a bunt by Seby Zavala. Noda was one of Worcester's standout performers, going 2 for 5 and driving in four runs. Roman Anthony was 1 for 4 with a game-tying homer in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In his WooSox debut following a promotion over the weekend, third baseman Blaze Jordan went 1 for 4 with a walk and a double. Trayce Thompson was 4 for 5 with a double and a run scored.

Starting pitcher Robert Stock delivered six strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks while punching out five batters. Wyatt Olds tossed one scoreless frame and Alex Hoppe threw two shutout innings in relief. Isaiah Campbell picked up the win despite allowing two runs (though both were unearned) on two hits and a walk in the top of the tenth.

Left-hander Chris Murphy continued his rehab assignment on Tuesday night, throwing a scoreless first inning as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Dalton Rogers followed him with four innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Gabriel Jackson threw three innings, allowing no hits or runs while fanning two batters and walking two. Christopher Troye earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Center fielder Allan Castro was in the middle of the action for the Sea Dogs. Castro drove in Portland's first run of the game on an RBI double in the fourth and gave the Sea Dogs the lead with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Max Ferguson also hit a solo home run earlier in the fifth as part of a 3-for-4 game.

The Drive bats got off to a fast start in the first inning, as Antonio Anderson smashed a three-run homer and Nazzan Zanetello immediately followed him with a solo shot to spot Greenville with a 4-0 lead. Zanetello added his second homer of the game in the third inning. Franklin Arias contributed to a couple of insurance runs in the later innings, knocking an RBI single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Arias was 2 for 3 with a walk and is now hitting .379/.416/.534 in 27 games since his promotion to Greenville.

Adam Smith drew the start for the Drive and was impressive on Tuesday night, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in five innings. Darvin Garcia struck out two and allowed no runs on a walk and two walks in two innings of relief. Jonathan Brand closed out the final two innings of the win, allowing a run on two hits.

Fresh off a promotion from the FCL last week, right fielder Enddy Azocar powered Salem to victory on Tuesday night. Azocar was 2 for 3 and drove in three runs via a sacrifice fly in the fourth, a solo home run in the fifth, and an RBI single in the eighth. Justin Gonzales was 2 for 5 with a two-run single in the fifth. First baseman Frederik Jimenez put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. Yoeilin Cespedes was 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.

Salem fell behind early in the game as starter Austin Erlicher allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. However, the bullpen was able to pick up the slack as the relief corps held Lynchburg in check in the middle and later innings. Adam Bates threw 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing no hits but walking three. Joe Vogatsky threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a batter. Eybersson Polanco allowed a run and struck out a batter in 2/3 of an inning.

In the Florida Complex League, the Red Sox bats exploded for 15 runs in an offensive showdown. The FCL Red Sox recorded six-run rallies in both the second and eighth innings as part of a full-team effort, in which all nine starting position players reached base. The headlining performances belonged to catcher Gerardo Rodriguez, who was 3 for 6 with two runs and three RBI, and center fielder Will Turner, who was 1 for 3 with two walks and four RBI. Johanfran Garcia was 1 for 5 with one walk, two runs, and two RBI.

Making his first appearance of the season after missing the entire 2024 season with Tommy John surgery, Jovani Moran was impressive as he struck out five batters and allowed one run in two innings. Yermain Ruiz allowed one unearned run in three innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. Merlin Bido fanned six batters in three shutout innings. Abis Prado was knocked around by the Pirates, allowing five runs and walking five batters without recording an out. Gilbel Galvan allowed one run in an inning to finish out the win.

Sadbiel Delzine, who was signed to a $500,000 bonus last winter and is ranked as the 30th prospect in the system, made his first appearance in the Red Sox organization. He allowed three runs on six hits in three innings, striking out one. In relief, Yariel Valdez allowed two runs in an inning and Juan Medina allowed four runs (three earned) in 2/3 of an inning before a scoreless 1 1/3 frames by Yomar De La Rosa. The Red Sox Blue bats got the team off to an early lead before the bullpen's struggles, as Josue Brito hit an RBI double in the first inning and then they added runs on a passed ball in the second and a bases-loaded walk and balk in the third. Second baseman Eliezer Alfonso stroked a two-run single in the fourth as part of a 2-for-4 game.

-----

The Red Sox Red pitching staff shut out Tampa Bay for the first five innings of the game but could not hold on in the later innings. Jakson Gamboa threw the first inning and Angelo Ladera followed him with two scoreless innings, striking out a pair of batters. Yohandry Gonzalez served as the bulk reliever on Tuesday, throwing four innings and taking the loss as he allowed a pair of runs on five hits and a walk. The lineup was not able to generate much offense but the top-ranked prospect on the team (20th overall) Dorian Soto was 2 for 4 out of the leadoff slot in the lineup.

Player of the Day: Greenville second baseman Nazzan Zanetello was the star of the system on Tuesday night, going 2 for 3 with a pair of solo home runs and a hit by pitch. Zanetello homered in each of his first two plate appearances of the night, collecting his third and fourth home runs of the season. Zanetello has scuffled in his first season in Greenville, as he is now hitting .163/.296/.289 in 44 games this season. A second-round draft pick in 2023, Zanetello has slipped to 36th in the SoxProspects.com rankings and he will hope that Tuesday night's strong performance is the start of a hot streak at the plate.
