Minor Notes: Mayer makes MLB debut, gets first career hit

It has been a rough go of late for the big league club, but one of the most anticipated debuts we have seen in a while has happened, as the third-ranked prospect in the system made it to the show.

Mayer makes MLB debut
Marcelo Mayer (pictured, left), who is currently ranked third at SoxProspects.com and ranked in the top 10 nationally, has made his MLB debut. His first game came on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader with the Orioles. The WooSox also had a doubleheader that day, and Mayer was driven to Boston after Worcester's first game. He picked up his first career hit on Sunday with a solid line drive to left field. Later in the game, he roped his first extra-base hit, a double to the gap in right center field. He is 3 for 12 so far and has played third base in all three games, as it appears Boston will be without Alex Bregman for a good chunk of time.

New podcast episode
In the 364th edition of the SoxProspects.com podcast, Chris and Ian dive into several minor league topics. They discuss recent promotions, including Jhostynxon Garcia, as well as some players beginning rehab assignments. They also talk about Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony, as well as Noah Song, who is back pitching again.

Transactions
The Red Sox acquired first baseman Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations. Noda was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. Noda is a veteran left-handed bat who will help with some first base depth. He had a good season back in 2023 for the Oakland Athletics, hitting .229/.364/.406 (118 OPS+) in 128 games. He hit 16 home runs and knocked in 54 runs.

Boston also transferred both Triston Casas and Masataka Yoshida to the 60-day IL.

The Red Sox also added a couple of pitchers, as they signed Erickson Ettien as an international free agent out of Venezuela. He is 18 years old and is a right-handed pitcher. They also purchased the contract of PJ Labriola, a 24-year-old left-handed pitcher who was pitching in independent ball this year.

The Red Sox also released first baseman Alex Binelas. He was acquired back in 2021 along with Jackie Bradley Jr. and David Hamilton in a trade for Hunter Renfroe. Binelas was immediately signed by the Philadelphia Phillies and assigned to Double-A Reading.

Greg Dudek of NESN.com wrote an article about Portland right-handed pitcher Yordanny Monegro. Red Sox director of pitching Justin Willard has nothing but great things to say about Monegro and the progress he has made so far in 2025.

Where are they now?
Former Red Sox minor leaguer Christian Koss has been getting a decent amount of playing time for the San Francisco Giants. In 67 plate appearances, he is hitting .233 with one home run and has accumulated 0.6 bWAR. Koss spent three years in the Sox organization.

Shaun Anderson has also seen time in the major leagues this year with the Los Angeles Angels. Drafted by Boston in 2016, Anderson is now 30 years old and has a 6.30 ERA this year in 10 innings to go along with 10 strikeouts and three walks. The Angels became the eighth team that Anderson has pitched for.
