Fort Report: Anthony, Campbell, Mayer, SoxProspects crew all have big weeks in Fort Myers

It was an exciting week down in Fort Myers as the MLB season is set to begin for the Red Sox in just over a week. The Sox' big three prospects all showed off during the Spring Breakout game, while the SoxProspects crew saw a ton of action on the backfields. More cuts have also come in as final decisions on the Opening Day roster draw closer.

Big three all go deep in Spring Breakout game
Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer, and Roman Anthony (pictured) certainly did not disappoint at the Spring Breakout game against the Tampa Bay Rays prospects, as all three hit a home run. Anthony's was a tap measure blast, caught on camera with a great view from behind home plate by our own Ian Cundall. The Futures at Fenway South showcase against Minnesota Twins prospects was also an exciting game, as Mikey Romero and Justin Gonzales each went deep at JetBlue Park. James Dunne breaks these two games down in further detail with a special spring training edition of the Cup of Coffee.

Another successful year in Florida for the SoxProspects crew
The SoxProspects.com crew spent a week in Fort Myers at Red Sox camp. They were able to put out some terrific content that can be found on social media handles for SoxProspects.com, Chris Hatfield, Ian Cundall, James Dunne, and Mike Andrews. Ian was able to get right behind home plate for both the Futures at Fenway South and Spring Breakout games. Check out Juan Valera pumping 100 MPH fastballs and Yoeilin Cespedes ripping a double

After going deep in the Spring Breakout game, Mayer was right back to work on the back fields fielding some grounders at shortstop. Here are a few more clips from the backfields, as Anthony and Campbell take some batting practice, while Yordanny Monegro pitches to Enddy Azocar. Next round of cuts from major league camp
The Red Sox optioned RHP Hunter Dobbins to minor league camp. He had appeared in two big league games for Boston this spring, allowing two earned runs over four innings of work with three strikeouts and one walk. The sox also reassigned RHPs Austin Adams, Noah Davis, and Isaiah Campbell to minor league camp. Lastly, they released minor league RHPs Conor Steinbaugh, Luis Talavera, and Diego Hernandez

Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic wrote a great piece on Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer excelling at not only baseball, but handling a large amount of coffee orders.

Ian and Chris took some time out of a busy week in Fort Myers to produce the 355th edition of the SoxProspects.com podcast. They discuss the minor league showcase games, including the Spring Breakout game and Futures at Fenway South, as well as some other highlights from the trip.

Ian also dove deeper into what he saw from the hitters at the spring showcase games in a new Notes from the Field piece.

Where are they now?
  • Mookie Betts, who spent nine years in the Red Sox organization and won an MVP and a World Series in 2018, will not play for the Dodgers in the Tokyo Series due to an illness, according to Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts.
  • Speaking of talented outfielders involved in huge Red Sox trades, Braden Montgomery, one of the big pieces the Sox gave up in the Garrett Crochet trade, has seen action in eight spring games so far for the White Sox and has gone 2 for 6 with a pair of singles and three walks. The outfielder was taken 12th overall in last year's draft.
  • Let's check in on three 2023 Sox draft picks that chose the college baseball route instead. Phoenix Call, an infielder taken in the 15th round by Boston in 2023, has played in 19 games so far this year for UCLA and is hitting .262 with a .652 OPS and 13 RBI for UCLA. Dylan Schlaegel, selected in the 17th round out of high school in 2023, is a redshirt freshman at Dallas Baptist and is just 1 for 11 with a double in eight games. Lastly, Robert Orloski, a RHP taken in the 20th round out of high school, is now at UTSA with a dazzling 6-0 record. He has gotten all of those wins coming out of the bullpen in a multi-inning role, tossing 24 1/3 innings in six games. He has a 4.44 ERA with 25 strikeouts and seven walks.
