Tazawa also called up, Bailey designated for assignment

Adam Kilgore of Boston.com is reporting this afternoon that in addition to the four players called up this morning, righthander Junichi Tazawa has also been recalled from his temporary assignment to the GCL Red Sox. The Japanese rookie has gone 2-3 with a 6.65 ERA in 5 major league appearances so far in 2009, including 4 starts, striking out 12 in 21.2 innings. In 20 minor league starts in 2009 for Portland and Pawtucket, Tazawa had pitched to a 9-7 record with a 2.55 ERA. He is expected to join the Red Sox tonight for the team's game at Tampa Bay.

In other news, to make sufficient room on the 40-man roster for Joey Gathright and Chris Woodward, the Red Sox have designated Jeff Bailey for assignment. Bailey, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 6 with a high ankle sprain, had been rehabbing for Triple-A Pawtucket. In 61 total games for the Paw Sox this season, Bailey has hit .264/.368/.423 with 10 home runs in 220 at-bats. The 30-year-old first baseman / outfielder has also hit .208/.330/.416 with 3 home runs in 77 at-bats at the major league level for Boston.
