Sox call up four as rosters expand

As the calendar turns to September and major league active rosters expand to up to 40 players, the Red Sox have made four initial call-ups. According to Pawtucket Red Sox broadcaster Dan Hoard, outfielders Brian Anderson and Joey Gathright, infielder Chris Woodward, and catcher George Kottaras (pictured) have been added to the Boston roster and will join the team as the Red Sox begin a road series in Tampa Bay.

Anderson, who was acquired at the end of July from the White Sox in exchange for Mark Kotsay, had been hitting .200/.281/.400 since joining the Paw Sox and has put up a .236/.316/.314 line in 191 major league at-bats between Boston and Chicago this season. Gathright, who was acquired last week from the Orioles for a player to be named later or cash, was 2 for 10 in 3 games for Pawtucket and was 3 for 14 in 20 major league games for the Chicago Cubs earlier this season. Woodward, who joined the Sox at the beginning of August after being claimed off waivers from Seattle, was 4 for 31 with Pawtucket and hit .225/.300/.239 in a 25-game stint with Boston following his acquisition. Finally, for Kottaras today will mark his return from a month-long tenure on the 15-day disabled list. He hit .292/.433/.417 during a 10-game rehab assignment at Pawtucket, and was hitting .224/.303/.376 in 85 at-bats for Boston as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher in 2009.
