Fall/Winter League Roundup: Perales hits 101 mph, Tucker off to hot start

It was a busy week for Sox players in the first few days of action in the Arizona Fall League. This week's roundup covers everything from October 6-12, and stats for all participating players can be found at the SoxProspects.com Fall & Winter Leagues page

-----

Arizona Fall League
Catcher Johanfan Garcia is off to a nice start this fall, going 4 for 12 with four singles and a walk last week. The 20-year old backstop hit .261 with 12 home runs and a .792 OPS in 58 games between the FCL Sox and Greenville. Second baseman Stanley Tucker has played in four games and is hitting .333/.412/.333. In the early going, Tucker leads Salt River in RBI with six and in stolen bases with three. 2025 SoxProspects.com Awards: Player of the Year

Welcome to the fifth and final day of 2025 SoxProspects.com Awards week. Throughout the week, we at SoxProspects.com have recognized our All-Star position players and pitchers, Graduate of the Year, Homegrown Player of the Year, Ex-Prospect of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and Breakout Player of the Year. Today, we start by naming our Player of the Year.

Player of the Year

Jhostynxon Garcia (pictured) followed up a standout 2024 season by putting up more impressive power numbers and making his MLB debut in 2025. After being added to the Red Sox' 40-man roster for Rule 5 protection purposes last November, the 22-year-old outfielder took part in his first big league camp this spring and returned to Portland for the start of the new campaign. At that time, he was ranked as the No. 14 prospect in the system.

2025 SoxProspects.com Awards: Rookie, Breakout, and Comeback Players of the Year

We continue our SoxProspects.com Awards week with our Rookie, Breakout, and Comeback players of the year. Eligible Rookies will have fewer than 50 plate appearances or 15 innings pitched in their minor league careers. Comeback Player is awarded a player who has returned to prospect form from injury, poor performance, or a combination of the two. Breakout Player recognizes the player who made the greatest jump in prospect status during the season. The 2025 honorees include a member of the 2025 playoff roster, a pitcher who has overcome obstacles throughout his career, and a high-upside 18-year-old who showed advanced skills for his age.

-----

Rookie of the Year: Payton Tolle
A unanimous selection among the SoxProspects.com staff, Tolle blazed through the minor leagues and found himself on a big-league mound in August. A second-round pick in the 2024 draft out of Texas Christian, fans were a bit surprised to see Tolle get a slightly above-slot bonus at the 50th overall pick. He was ranked 87th in the draft by MLB Pipeline and 82nd by Baseball America. But the Red Sox clearly liked him more than that, and the left-hander debuted with Greenville on April 8. His first start was one to forget, as he gave up six runs while only recording five outs. It ended up being his worst start of the year, and he responded quickly by striking out 76 and allowing 14 runs over his next 48 innings.

He made his Double-A debut on June 28, but it only took him five weeks to completely overpower the Eastern League. His eye-popping numbers of a 1.67 ERA and 0.74 WHIP with Portland turned a lot of heads, and he was promoted to Worcester for what ended up being just a cup of coffee in Triple-A. His three starts with the WooSox saw him strike out 17 and walk only 2 over 15 innings while batters hit .193 against him. His major league debut was one of the highlights of the 2025 season for Red Sox fans as he struck out eight over 5 1/3 innings while leaving with a shutout until the bullpen let two inherited runners score. He ended the year in a bullpen role where he hit triple digits while connecting with fans due to his charisma on the mound.

2025 SoxProspects.com Awards: Graduate, Homegrown, and Ex-Prospect

We continue our SoxProspects.com Awards coverage with the 2025 Graduate, Homegrown Player, and Ex-Prospect of the year. The Graduate and Homegrown honorees both made significant contributions to the big-league club this year, while the Ex-Prospect Award recipient is someone who started the year in the middle of Boston's lineup.

-----

Graduate of the Year: Roman Anthony
Anthony cemented himself as the top prospect in baseball in his two-plus months to begin the year in Worcester. He hit .288/.423/.491 with almost as many walks as strikeouts as a 20-year-old (turned 21 on May 13) in the International League. He was the Red Sox Minor League Hitter of the Month and the SoxProspects.com Player of the Month in April. When last year's winner of this award, Wilyer Abreu, went down with an oblique injury on June 9, Anthony was called up to take his place in right field. His performance barely took a dip in going from Triple-A to the majors, as he hit .292/.396/.463 over 71 games before an oblique injury ended his regular season on September 2.

2025 SoxProspects.com All-Stars: Pitchers

Following up on Monday's post recognizing All-Star position players, we continue 2025 SoxProspects.com Awards week by shifting our focus to All-Star pitchers. This group includes two lefties who made their big league debuts this season, three trade acquisitions, and one undrafted free agent.

-----

Starting Pitcher: Payton Tolle
Tolle is a first-time SoxProspects.com All-Star after making quite the impression in his first full professional season. Selected with the 50th overall pick in the 2024 draft out of TCU, Tolle opened the 2025 campaign in Greenville but wasted very little time in moving up the organizational ladder. By late June, the 22-year-old left-hander was promoted to Portland. By early August, he was in Worcester. Between the three levels, he forged a 3.04 ERA with 133 strikeouts to 23 walks across 20 appearances (18 starts) spanning 91 2/3 total innings in which he held opponents to a .203 batting average. The 6-foot-6 southpaw was recognized as the Red Sox' Minor League Pitcher of the Year and made his MLB debut on Aug. 29, posting a 6.06 ERA with 19 strikeouts to eight walks in his first seven outings (three starts) and 16 1/3 innings for the big club. Equipped with an upper-90s fastball that can reach triple digits, Tolle is currently ranked as both the top pitching prospect and top overall prospect in the system.

2025 SoxProspects.com All-Stars: Position Players

Welcome to the 2025 SoxProspects.com Awards week! Over the next five days, we will present our annual awards on the news page, recognizing the standout performers from the season. Following the format we've used the last few years, the schedule will be as follows:

Monday: All-Star position players
Tuesday: All-Star pitchers
Wednesday: Graduate of the Year; Homegrown Player of the Year; Ex-Prospect of the Year
Thursday: Rookie of the Year; Breakout Player of the Year; Comeback Player of the Year
Friday: Player of the Year; Pitcher of the Year

We kick things off with the All-Star position players as selected by the SoxProspects.com staff. While we consider factors such as age advancement and opponent quality, these awards recognize the players' in-game performances rather than a commentary on any status as a prospect. The All-Star team is highlighted by four players who made their major league debuts in 2024, two on the position player side.

-----

After a knee injury that limited Garcia to just 14 games in 2024, he re-emerged with a strong 2025 campaign. Garcia started the year on the injured list as he continued to rehab, tuning up with a 12-game stint in the FCL before taking his spot in Greenville. He hit a solid .249/.327/.428 with the Drive, popping nine homers in 46 games. He caught in consecutive games for the first time on July 10 and 11, portending his healthy second half during which he slugged .500. Garcia is currently the 31st-ranked player in the system, highest at the catcher position.

Minor Notes: Playoffs set to begin; Nationals reportedly hire Toboni

It was the first full week without minor league games, but there were several big news stories for Boston fans to follow. The one getting the most attention is the playoff roster for the Wild Card Series against the Yankees. There was also a big shakeup in the baseball operations department with Paul Toboni leaving, while Payton Tolle and Jhostynxon Garcia (pictured) received notable accolades.

Playoff preview
Chris and Ian got together for a new episode of the Podcast to preview the MLB playoffs. They discuss how the Red Sox got to 89 wins, and who they suspect will be included on the playoff roster. Later in the episode, they do a season review of each affiliate while picking the top offensive player and pitcher for each team.

Nationals hire Toboni to lead baseball operations
Red Sox Senior Vice President/Assistant General Manager Paul Toboni has reportedly been hired by the Washington Nationals to lead their baseball operations department. Toboni, 35, was a fast-riser in Boston's organization. His career started 10 years ago as a baseball operations intern with the Red Sox, and he held various leadership positions including the Director of Amateur Scouting and the Vice President of Amateur Scouting and Player Development.

Minor Notes: Worcester's season ends as Red Sox cling to wild card spot

The 2025 season has officially concluded for all Red Sox minor league affiliates as Worcester's season came to an end on Sunday. The big league team is currently one game ahead of Cleveland and Houston, who are tied for the last wild card spot, and the Red Sox' exciting pitching depth has been a major factor in their postseason push.

-----

Young left-handers fortify Red Sox pitching staff
A trio of left-handed pitchers in Connelly Early, Kyle Harrison (pictured), and Payton Tolle have been recalled to the major league club in recent weeks and have provided a boost to a battered Red Sox pitching staff. Over the last week, Harrison made his first start with the Red Sox and delivered six innings of one-run ball against the Rays on Saturday night. Harrison struck out five and walked two while throwing 70% of his pitches for strikes in a much-needed excellent performance. Early made two starts in the last week, throwing 5 1/3 innings while allowing a run and striking out seven against the A's on Tuesday. The third start of Early's major league career was less dominant on Sunday night, as he allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings. However, the eighth-ranked prospect in the system has been impressive through his first 14 1/3 innings with Boston, as he has pitched to a 1.88 ERA with 22 strikeouts. The Red Sox have placed Tolle in the bullpen as they continue to monitor his innings in his first professional season. He has allowed two runs while striking out five batters through four innings in his first two relief appearances.

Cup of Coffee: Worcester wins a slugfest in the season finale

9/22 Cup of Coffee: In the final game of the minor league season for Boston's affiliates, the WooSox held on in a high-scoring affair. All eyes will turn to the major league squad as they battle for a playoff spot. The next game action from the prospects will come when the Arizona Fall League kicks off on October 6.

-----

A 15-hit offensive attack helped overcome a shaky bullpen. Nathan Hickey kicked off the scoring with a solo home run in the first, and he added a bases-loaded walk in the fourth. Max Ferguson (pictured) went 3 for 5 with a double and two steals, while Mikey Romero went 2 for 4 with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Phillip Sikes went 3 for 4 with a walk, and Karson Simas went 2 for 3 with a walk as nine players collected at least one hit.

Cup of Coffee: Worcester takes down Rochester to clinch winning season

9/21 Cup of Coffee:
As the Minor League season draws to a close, Worcester jumped ahead early and took another lead late to clinch the fourth-straight winning season under manager Chad Tracy in the penultimate game of the year.

-----

Worcester got a strong start from Jose De Leon, who allowed a single run in the fifth as he pitched 4 1/3 innings with three hits and four walks while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts. Coincidentally, De Leon also struck out eight hitters against Rochester back on June 8. While De Leon was dealing early, the WooSox plated three runs in the third. After Max Ferguson singled and Seby Zavala walked, Mikey Romero doubled to right field to plate Ferguson. The very next hitter, Kristian Campbell, who started in center field, doubled home Zavala and Romero.

Leading 3-1 entering the seventh, Luis Perales struggled for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander recorded a single out on a strikeout but walked a pair of batters. Perales only faced three hitters and threw just eight of his 18 pitches for strikes. Jacob Webb followed on the mound and was charged with a blown save as he allowed two runs that were charged to Perales.

With the score even in the bottom half of the seventh, Ferguson broke the tie with his second home run in Worcester. Webb came out for the eighth and retired the side while working around a leadoff single, and Wyatt Olds closed the game out with a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

-----

Player of the Day: Max Ferguson had his fingerprints all over the WooSox's victory on Saturday. After scoring the first run of the game following a leadoff walk in the third, the former fifth-round pick slugged his second home run since being promoted to Worcester and his ninth across two levels. Since being brought up to the WooSox, Ferguson is slashing .250/.323/.429 in 18 games. He is currently unranked in the SoxProspects' Top 60 rankings.

Cup of Coffee: Hickey highlights night of rallies, but WooSox fall in extras

9/20 Cup of Coffee:
On the final Friday evening of the minor league season, Worcester rallied from three deficits but could not overcome a fourth. Following a wild three-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth, the WooSox fell in 10 at Polar Park.

-----

Worcester came back from being down 2-0 in the fourth, 4-2 in the sixth, and 7-4 in the ninth, but a wild pitch and sacrifice fly scored the automatic runner in the 10th. Washington's Josiah Gray was a stiff test for the WooSox in his rehab start, going 2 2/3 hitless frames, but he was matched by Worcester starter Isaac Coffey. Coffey did not allow a hit for the first 3 2/3 innings, but Rochester's first knock was a two-run homer. That was the only hit the right-hander allowed in four innings, as he struck out two and walked three. Chadwick Tromp ripped a two-run double in the bottom half of the fourth to knot the game at two apiece. Tromp was 2 for 5 on the evening. Bryan Mata went two innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. This could be Mata's final outing with the Red Sox organization. He will be a minor league free agent in November after ten years in the system. Karson Simas delivered another two-run, game-tying double, evening things at 4-4 in the sixth.

Cup of Coffee: Simas drives in Worcester's lone run; Olds, Webb combine for 4 strikeouts

9/19 Cup of Coffee:
Despite tallying 10 hits as a team, Worcester managed to score just one run in a blowout loss at the hands of Rochester on Thursday. The defeat dropped the WooSox to 74-72 on the season with three games remaining.

-----

Jack Anderson went 4 2/3 innings and took the loss in his final start of the season for Worcester, allowing four earned runs on four hits (including two home runs), three walks, and four strikeouts. He threw 77 pitches (50 strikes) and generated 11 whiffs. Wyatt Olds and Jacob Webb combined for four strikeouts in 2 2/3 scoreless frames of relief. David Sandlin and Noah Song, on the other hand, surrendered a total of six runs over the course of the seventh and eighth innings.

Cup of Coffee: Uberstine deals, Perales dominates in Triple-A debut

9/18 Cup of Coffee
: Worcester picked up their second consecutive win to improve to 74-71 on the season. With only four games remaining, that means the WooSox need just one more win to clinch a winning season for 2025.

-----

Tyler Uberstine (pictured) set the tone for Worcester on the mound, firing five shutout innings. The 26-year old righty gave up just three hits to go along with six strikeouts and one walk. Luis Perales followed Uberstine and was tremendous in his WooSox debut. He struck out the side in order on 11 pitches, 10 of which were strikes. He also induced five swinging strikes on those 11 pitches. He did not throw a single fastball in the outing. Luis Guerrero and Jovani Moran each tossed a scoreless inning before Nick Burdi nailed down his fifth save. Burdi allowed one run, but struck out a pair.

Cup of Coffee: Romero doubles twice, Drohan strikes out six in WooSox win

9/17 Cup of Coffee:
After Portland's season concluded on Sunday, the WooSox are the now the only active Red Sox affiliate. Worcester survived a ninth-inning scare to win the opening game of their final series of the season.

-----

The WooSox jumped out to an early lead as Abraham Toro launched a three-run homer in the first inning. Worcester grabbed another run in the second as Mikey Romero (pictured) drove in Tyler McDonough with a double. Romero added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and was 2 for 3 overall in the game. Nathan Hickey put together a strong game for the WooSox, going 2 for 4 and ripping an RBI double in the eighth inning.

Minor Notes: Portland wraps while Worcester enters final week, Perales returns from injury

Only one more week left to play in the 2025 season for Worcester, while Portland ended its season on Sunday. There was a return to the field for a top prospect, and several players will represent the organization at the Arizona Fall League in a month.

-----

Perales returns from Tommy John Surgery
After being sidelined since last June, Luis Perales made his return to the mound on Saturday following his recovery from right elbow surgery. The news was not anticipated and came as a bit of a surprise. In recent weeks, Perales had been seen throwing live batting practice at Boston's spring training complex in Florida and putting up eye-popping metrics at that.

Perales started and pitched the first inning in Portland's matchup with Binghamton on Saturday. While only throwing eight of his 16 pitches for strikes, the 22-year-old managed to toss a scoreless frame with just a walk on his line. Perales will see more regular-season action this week with Worcester before heading to the Arizona Fall League.

Cup of Coffee: Password homers; Rogers pitches well in Portland's finale

9/15 Cup of Coffee: Portland's season came to an end with another shutout loss to Binghamton. Dalton Rogers (pictured) ended the season strong, while Jhostynxon Garcia went deep for the WooSox.

-----

José De León carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the wheels came off as he dropped to 0-9. He walked the first three batters of the sixth inning, and all three came around to score. He ultimately allowed four runs despite allowing just one hit. Luis Guerrero did not have a good audition for a spot in the major league bullpen as he surrendered three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. A two-run home run off the bat of Jhostynxon Garcia was all the offense Worcester could muster. Singles from Kristian CampbellAbraham Toro, and Chadwick Tromp accounted for the only other hits.

The WooSox head back home for their last series of the season against Rochester.

Cup of Coffee: Perales returns to the mound, Rosier drives in four

9/14 Cup of Coffee: While there were just a pair of games in the Boston affiliates as the Minor League season winds down, there were some highlights on Saturday. After making a recovery from Tommy John surgery, Luis Perales made his long-awaited return to the mound in Portland. Corey Rosier drove in four runs in Worcester's win over Syracuse.

-----

Worcester struck first with a four-run first thanks to an RBI single by Nathan Hickey and a single by Corey Rosier two batters later that cleared the bases after a fielding error. Two innings later, it was Rosier again who supplied the runs. This time, the left fielder doubled to plate Jhostynxon Garcia and Tyler McDonough to make it 6-0. Rosier led the way for Worcester with three hits and four runs driven in as eight of the nine hitters in the lineup reached base at least once.

Those runs would be all the support the WooSox pitching staff would need. Isaac Coffey started and pitched the first four frames. His scoreless outing featured three hits, three walks and three strikeouts in the no-decision. Noah Song followed and allowed a pair of runs across the fifth and sixth. While he allowed three hits, he struck out four and did not allow a walk. Isaiah Campbell eventually picked up the win in relief after a scoreless seventh and eighth with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Hobie Harris pitched the ninth, walking a pair and giving up two runs on a two-run home run.

-----

Despite out-hitting Binghamton 6-to-3, Portland failed to get a hit in 11 tries with runners in scoring position to give John Holobetz a tough loss on his line. Amid the loss, the top storyline was the return of Luis Perales. Pitching in a game for the first time since last June, the right-hander fired a scoreless first with no hits and a walk. Perales featured a fastball which registered between 97-100 mph along with a cutter, slider, and splitter over 16 pitches, eight of which finding the strike zone.

Holobetz followed Perales and allowed a single run over six frames on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Since being promoted to Portland, the 23-year-old has pitched to a 2.39 ERA over 37 2/3 innings. Offensively, Portland got multi-hit outings from Franklin Arias and Ronald Rosario, with Caden Rose and Justin Riemer recording the other two knocks.

-----

Player of the Day: Corey Rosier continued his strong finish to the season with a 3-for-4 evening, which featured a double and four runs driven in. Through Saturday's game, Roser is slashing .357/.419/.429 across 30 plate appearances in September. Rosier is currently unranked in the SoxProspects' Top 60.

Cup of Coffee: Senga stymies WooSox

9/13 Cup of Coffee:
It was a Central New York sweep of the Sox affiliates on Friday night. Portland dropped a walk-off in Binghamton despite a 10-hit effort. About 60 miles up I-81, Worcester was shut down by a Syracuse three-hitter.

-----

Worcester managed just three hits off veteran hurler Kodai Senga and a pair of relievers, none after the fourth inning. The WooSox actually held an early lead when a Max Ferguson double plated Jhostynxon Garcia in the second. Abraham Toro led off the fourth with a single but was quickly erased on a double play, and the WooSox did not have another baserunner until a ninth-inning Chadwick Tromp walk. Jack Anderson turned in a solid start, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings, striking out seven while walking only one. Wyatt Olds surrendered a run in two innings before Nick Burdi fired a scoreless eighth.

Cup of Coffee: Romero, Toro each homer for Worcester; Arias also goes deep

9/12 Cup of Coffee:
While the big club was off, Boston's affiliates went 2-0 on Thursday. Behind a strong start from Tyler Uberstine and multi-homer performances from Mikey Romero (pictured) and Abraham Toro, Worcester routed Syracuse. Speaking of long balls, Franklin Arias came through with a clutch go-ahead home run in Portland's win over Binghamton.

-----

Tyler Uberstine picked up the win in his start for Worcester after scattering two hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch over five scoreless innings in which he struck out six. He threw 82 pitches (52 strikes) and generated 12 whiffs. Luis Guerrero took over for Uberstine and put up another zero in the sixth, while David Sandlin allowed one run in his two innings of relief. Jacob Webb then closed things out by fanning a pair in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

Cup of Coffee: Drohan, Romero lead Worcester to win

9/11 Cup of Coffee
: Worcester picked up a win behind a great outing from Shane Drohan and a huge hit from Mikey Romero (pictured). The bullpen for the WooSox was also terrific. Portland dropped a tough one in extra innings, but saw five players record multiple hits.

-----

In his third start with Worcester since coming back from injury, Shane Drohan finished five innings for the first time since early May. They were five great innings, as he did not allow a run on just two hits. He punched out three and did not issue a free pass, throwing 41 of his 63 pitches for strikes. Luis Guerrero, Alex Hoppe, and Isaiah Campbell each fired a shutout frame in relief, with Guerrero striking out a pair while allowing no hits or walks. Hobie Harris allowed a run in the ninth inning, although it was unearned. Mikey Romero had the big blow offensively, blasting a three-run home run in the second inning. The 10th-ranked prospect in the system finished with two hits and two runs scored. Abraham Toro went 3 for 4 with three singles, a sacrifice fly, and a pair of stolen bases. Corey Rosier singled, doubled and walked, while Kristian Campbell went 2 for 5 with a pair of singles. Campbell played right field.

Cup of Coffee: Rivera tosses six shutout innings; Portland eliminated from playoffs

9/10 Cup of Coffee:
Both of the remaining active Red Sox affiliates lost in low-scoring games on Tuesday night. The Sea Dogs were eliminated from postseason contention with a loss to Binghamton despite six excellent innings from Eduardo Rivera (pictured). Worcester also lost a close game, which was highlighted by five solid innings from Jose De Leon and an RBI triple for Seby Zavala

-----

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, catcher Seby Zavala put the WooSox on the board with an RBI triple in the third inning and then came around to score on a wild pitch. Corey Rosier was 1 for 3 and scored Worcester's other run. Jose De Leon tossed five innings, striking out seven batters while allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. The Worcester bullpen was excellent, as Wyatt Olds, Jovani Moran, and Nick Burdi each threw a scoreless frame, but the WooSox bats could not muster another rally after the third inning.

Minor Notes: Arias promtoed to Portland; Salem and Greenville close out 2025 seasons

The Red Sox are down to two affiliates in the 2025 season, as Salem and Greenville saw their seasons end on Sunday. There were also a few promotions to Portland, including the second-ranked prospect in the system.

-----

Franklin Arias promoted to Portland

After posting an .804 OPS with Salem, Arias was moved to Greenville and hit .265/.329/.380 in 87 games before receiving the call to Portland. The 19-year old shortstop has played four games with the Sea Dogs so far and is 6 for 20 (.300) with a double and a home run. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe wrote a piece on the promotion, detailing yet another Sox player moving quickly through the farm system. Arias is ranked 23rd nationally at MLB Pipeline.

Cup of Coffee: Hickey and Jimenez homer twice; Greenville and Salem end their seasons

9/8 Cup of Coffee: The seasons came to an end for Greenville and Salem, while it is looking like next week will be the end of the line for Portland. In Worcester, a walk-off single from Seby Zavala helped the WooSox earn a split. John Holobetz was excellent for Portland, and Frederik Jimenez (pictured) hit two home runs for Salem.

-----

A two-run walk-off single from Seby Zavala gave the WooSox the win in game one. Kyle Harrison started but went only one inning and allowed one run while striking out two. While Harrison has been battling an ankle injury, he may have been removed to keep his arm fresh in case he is needed in the majors. David Sandlin's struggles continued as he threw the next two frames and allowed two runs and walked three. The win went to Hobie Harris as he tossed a scoreless seventh and then allowed only the zombie runner to score in the eighth. Aside from Zavala, the star offensively was Nathan Hickey. Hickey launched two home runs and drove in three as he went 2 for 3 with a walk. Mikey Romero went 2 for 4 with an RBI single out of the leadoff spot.

The RailRiders got to Isaac Coffey for four runs over the first two innings and never looked back. Coffey gave up six hits, and he was followed by Bryan Mata, who struck out three and allowed a solo home run in his two frames. Only two players for Worcester recorded a hit, with Kristian Campbell and Abraham Toro both going 2 for 3 with a strikeout.

Cup of Coffee: Fajardo takes the mound for Salem, Godbout continues strong start

9/7 Cup of Coffee:
After dodging various rounds of weather, some games were played across the affiliates on Saturday. In Portland, Miguel Bleis had a productive outing despite a quiet night from the rest of the  Sea Dogs' bats. Yhoiker Fajardo took the mound in Salem looking to continue his stellar season, and Henry Godbout continued his strong play in Greenville after a four-hour rain delay.

-----

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (NYY) vs. Worcester Red Sox (PPD)
This game was washed out due to inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday, with the first game beginning at 1:05 p.m.

-----

The Portland offense managed a single hit, which came off the bat of Miguel Bleis, through the first eight innings of the game before scoring three in the bottom of the ninth. Entering the final frame down 8-0, a walk and single began the inning before Bleis doubled home Ahbram Liendo for Portland's first run of the game. The very next hitter, Drew Ehrhard, reached on a fielding error that allowed Marvin Alcantara and Bleis to score for the final runs of the contest. Along with Bleis' two hits, the outfielder also swiped his seventh base of the season.

On the mound, Caleb Bolden went five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) with seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts while taking the loss. Yovanny Cruz pitched three scoreless innings in relief before Jonathan Brand struggled in the ninth inning with three earned runs of his own thanks to three hits and a walk.

With the loss, Portland fell to 4.5 games back of Somerset for the Eastern League Northeast Division's second-half playoff spot with seven games to play.

-----

After rain pushed the start of the game until after 9 p.m. local time, the back-and-forth game saw Greenville fall short amid a pivotal playoff push. After falling behind 1-0 after one, the Drive took a 2-1 lead thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Nazzan Zanetello, his sixth of the season. After runs in each of the third and fourth by Winston-Salem, Greenville fought back and tied it in the seventh inning. Down to its final out, Henry Godbout singled home Zanetello, who led off the inning with a single. In the bottom half of the frame, Joe Vogatsky allowed the winning run to score on a single.

Zanetello's home run was part of a 2-for-3 night with a pair of RBIs. Godbout continued his hot start to professional baseball with two hits of his own, an RBI and a stolen base. Shea Sprauge started for Greenville and pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Erik Rivera followed and did not allow a run while recording four outs despite walking three. He also struck out two. Vogatsky pitched the final 1 1/3 frames before taking the loss.

The loss puts Greenville 1/2 games behind Hub City for the second-half title in the South Atlantic League South Division. The Drive will need to sweep their doubleheader with Winston-Salem today and hope for a Spartanburgers loss in order to make the playoffs.

-----

Yhoiker Fajardo cruised through the first two frames but struggled with command in his latest start. While walking four in his three innings of work, Fajardo also allowed a pair of hits, four runs (two earned) and six strikeouts. Joey Gartrell followed and pitched the next three innings, allowing a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts added to his line. Wuilliams Rodriguez struggled in his two innings as he surrendered four runs thanks to five hits and three walks, and Calvin Bickerstaff closed it out after pitching the ninth.

The offensive explosion by Salem was led by multi-hit outings from Skylar King, Jack Winnay, Enddy Azocar, Kleyver Salazar, and Caleb Berry. King and Berry each drove in three on the evening, Winnay plated a pair of his own and Salazar added his 36th RBI of the year.

-----

Player of the Day: With a few weeks of pro ball under his belt, Skylar King made an impact in Salem's victory on Saturday. The outfielder went 2 for 5 with a run scored and three runs driven in to raise his slashline to .256/.354/.384 across 24 games. Boston's 15th-round pick in this summer's draft is currently unranked in SoxProspects' Top 60.

Cup of Coffee: Garcia leads Greenville rally in playoff push

9/6 Cup of Coffee:
It was a split decision down on the farm on Friday night. With a magic number for elimination down to two, Greenville staged a late rally led by Johanfran Garcia, winning in extra innings. Worcester had the system's other victory, with Nathan Hickey ripping a pair of doubles in support of a Tyler Uberstine quality start. Brooks Brannon kept his streak alive, but Portland's loss dimmed its playoff hopes, while Salem fell in a slugfest.

-----

A big night at the plate by Nathan Hickey helped support a quality Tyler Uberstine start. Hickey opened the scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. He would add another double and a walk, finishing 2 for 3 with three RBI. Mikey Romero ripped his fifth double in his last 10 games, giving him a system-leading 27 on the season. Trayce Thompson doubled, walked, and scored a pair as part of a 1-for-3 effort, while Tyler McDonough added an RBI triple. Staked to an early 4-0 lead, Tyler Uberstine went to work. He allowed two runs on six his in his six frames, striking out eight while walking one. He threw 66 of 98 pitches for strikes and induced 18 whiffs. Scranton reached Jovani Moran for a pair of runs in 1 1/3, but Isaiah Campbell came on for a perfect 1 2/3 innings to earn the save.

Cup of Coffee: Arias clubs first Double-A homer, Mullins fans six in Portland

9/5 Cup of Coffee:
As the big club prepares for a weekend series in Arizona, Boston's affiliates went 2-1 on Thursday. Mikey Romero provided the only offense with his two-run home run in Worcester's loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Franklin Arias (pictured) clubbed his first Double-A homer, while Hayden Mullins struck out six over five innings in Portland's win over Erie. Greenville's game against Winston-Salem was postponed due to inclement weather. Jack Winnay drove in three runs in Salem's win over Fayetteville.

-----

Shane Drohan went 3 2/3 innings in his start for Worcester, allowing three earned runs on five hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. He threw 63 pitches (43 strikes) and generated 13 whiffs. Jacob Webb and Hobie Harris were tagged for a total of three runs, while Alex Hoppe and Nick Burdi combined for three scoreless frames of relief. At the plate, Mikey Romero accounted for his side's only offense by going 1 for 3 with a two-run home run. Kristian Campbell went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Cup of Coffee: Futrell fires five shutout innings, White picks up four hits

9/4 Cup of Coffee
: Greenville was the only affiliate to win last night, and they did so behind another very strong start from Devin Futrell (pictured). The bullpen was also terrific, and Mason White had a huge game offensively. Franklin Arias also picked up his first multi-hit game with the Sea Dogs.

-----

It was a tough night for the offense against 37-year-old veteran Kenta Maeda, as they managed just one hit all game. The lone knock was a solo shot off the bat of Nathan Hickey in the eighth inning. The first baseman now has 14 long balls on the season. Kristian Campbell played center field and went 0 for 4 with a strikeout. Jose De Leon had another tough outing, surrendering four earned runs on five hits and four walks in 4 2/3 frames. On the positive side, he punched out seven. David Sandlin tossed 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball with one strikeout and no walks. Chris Murphy threw a perfect inning on just 10 pitches, including a pair of strikeouts. Isaac Coffey was missing plenty of bats in his two innings of work, with four strikeouts and no free passes. He gave up one run on a solo home run.

August Players of the Month: Nick Sogard and Yhoiker Fajardo

With the fifth full month of the minor league season behind us, it is time to present the SoxProspects.com Players of the Month Awards for August to utility man Nick Sogard (pictured, left) and right-hander Yhoiker Fajardo (pictured, bottom right). The former has already graduated from his prospect status, while the latter has steadily been on the rise since making his organizational debut earlier this year.

Sogard, who turns 28 next week, spent most of August at Worcester and put up strong offensive numbers. The versatile switch-hitter slashed .348/.463/.472 with five doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, 21 runs scored, three stolen bases, 19 walks, and 20 strikeouts in 24 games (110 plate appearances). He also appeared in one game for Boston on Aug. 29 but was sent back down when Nathaniel Lowe returned from paternity leave the following day. Overall, Sogard is batting .276/.393/.385 with 22 doubles, five home runs, 28 RBIs, 64 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, 64 walks, and 73 strikeouts through 91 games (409 plate appearances) for the WooSox this season. In that time, he has made 47 starts at shortstop, 21 starts at third base, 16 starts at second base, four starts at first base, and three starts in right field.

Cup of Coffee: Arias debuts in Portland; Campbell drives in six runs

9/3 Cup of Coffee:
Franklin Arias made his Double-A debut and Ronald Rosario blasted two home runs in a blowout win for the Sea Dogs. Kristian Campbell (pictured) finished a single short of the cycle and Connelly Early struck out 10 in an excellent outing but Worcester was unable to hold onto the lead and fell short in their series opener. The Drive lost a pitching duel despite four strong innings apiece by Brady Tygart and Luis Cohen. Salem had an off day after a rare Monday game to celebrate Labor Day.

-----

Kristian Campbell did his best to keep the WooSox in the game but a mammoth seventh inning for the RailRiders was too much for Worcester to overcome. Campbell finished the game just a single short of the cycle, as he went 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, a home run, and six RBI. Nick Sogard had an excellent game out of the leadoff spot in the lineup, going 3 for 4 with a walk and three runs scored. Mikey Romero hit a solo home run in a 1-for-5 game.

Minor Notes: Tolle strikes out eight in MLB debut; Gonzales promoted to Greenville

The big story of the week is Payton Tolle's electric MLB debut. Tolle hit 99 mph and struck out eight Pirates. Tolle's promotion was part of a larger shakeup with the big league pitching staff, while Justin Gonzales got promoted and Juan Valera returned from injury.

-----

Tolle dazzles in big league debut
Left-hander Payton Tolle (pictured, left) quickly became a fan favorite after going toe-to-toe with Paul Skenes on Friday night at Fenway. Tolle struck out eight and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. He left with a shutout, but the bullpen allowed two inherited runners to score. Tolle figures to remain in the big league rotation for the rest of the year, though the Red Sox may choose to keep him on five days rest. SoxProspects.com Director of Scouting Ian Cundall did a Transaction Analysis on Tolle's promotion which includes a full scouting report on the 6-foot-6 left-hander.

Tolle is also the focus of the most recent episode of the podcast. Ian was joined by Geoff Pontes of Baseball America to discuss Tolle's journey to the majors, his MLB debut, and where he ranks among best left-handed pitching prospects in baseball.

-----

Griffin Kilander got the start and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Cup of Coffee: McDonough hits two home runs; Harrison held out for Wednesday

9/1 Cup of Coffee: The minor league season is winding down as Greenville and Salem are entering the last week of the regular season. In Worcester, Kyle Harrison is a top option to pitch on Wednesday for Boston, as he was held out of his scheduled start on Sunday. Tyler McDonough (pictured) combined with Abraham Toro to lead Worcester's offense, while Brooks Brannon went deep for Portland.

-----

Two home runs and six RBI from Tyler McDonough led the way in a rout of Durham. McDonough set the tone for the day with a grand slam in the first inning, and he followed it up with a two-run shot in the sixth. A solo home run from Max Ferguson and a three-run home run off the bat of Abraham Toro accounted for the other four runs. Kristian Campbell scored three times as he went 1 for 3 with two walks. Kyle Harrison was the scheduled starter, but he is being held back in case the Red Sox need a spot start on Wednesday. Chris Murphy took the ball instead and fired three innings of one-run ball. The win went to David Sandlin, who followed with two hitless frames. It marked the first scoreless multi-inning appearance with the WooSox for Sandlin.

Cup of Coffee: Wehunt throws four strong innings; Encarnacion homers in Greenville

8/31 Cup of Coffee:
It was a slow night for the Red Sox affiliates as Portland emerged with the system's only win. Ronald Rosario and Marvin Alcantara homered while Blake Wehunt threw four impressive innings in the Sea Dogs victory. Abraham Toro hit a home run but Tyler Uberstine struggled in a WooSox loss. Freili Encarnacion (pictured) collected three hits and a home run for Greenville while D'Angelo Ortiz had a big game for Salem.

-----

Starting pitcher Tyler Uberstine struggled with his control and was hit hard by Durham on Saturday night. In five innings of work, he allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits and five walks, though he did strike out six batters. Wyatt Olds followed him with two perfect innings, striking out four batters. Isaac Coffey tossed the final inning for Worcester, walking one batter in a scoreless frame. It was a quiet night for the Worcester bats as they generated just two runs on four hits. Abraham Toro was 1 for 4 and drilled a solo home run in the second inning. Nathan Hickey drove in Worcester's only other run with an RBI single in the sixth and he was also 1 for 4 in the game. Corey Rosier was 2 for 3 and stole a base.

Cup of Coffee: Drohan dominates in WooSox return; Garcia walks off Greenville

8/30 Cup of Coffee:
Payton Tolle, making his major league debut, understandably overshadowed much of the other action in the system, so the SoxProspects.com Cup of Coffee is here to catch you up on Friday night's goings on. While Tolle was battling Skenes, Shane Drohan (pictured) and Juan Valera made their long-awaited returns to Worcester and Greenville, respectively. Drohan was unhittable as the WooSox squandered his work, while Valera was impressive in a back-and-forth contest before some Johanfran Garcia heroics. Hayden Mullins cruised for the Sea Dogs, while a late rally doomed Salem's comeback.

-----

The WooSox fell despite an outstanding return from Shane Drohan. On the shelf with a forearm injury since May 7, the left-handed hurler went 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out nine of the 12 batters he faced. The only baserunner he allowed was a one-out walk in the second, which he followed by striking the next seven Durham Bulls. Relieved to see Drohan out, Durham knocked solo homers off of Jovani Moran and Isaiah Campbell before plating three against Zack Kelly. Chadwick Tromp drove in two of the three Worcester runs, one on a sacrifice fly and another on a ninth-inning double. Mikey Romero doubled and walked as part of his 1-for-3 effort, and Max Ferguson also netted a two-bagger.

Brooks Brannon recorded four hits, while Ronald Rosario and Drew Ehrhard went deep in Portland's rout of Hartford. Johanfran Garcia homered, and Henry Godbout returned to action in Greenville's loss to Bowling Green. Enddy Azocar (pictured) delivered in the clutch for Salem in a comeback win over Kannapolis.

-----

Jose De Leon went five innings and took the loss in his start for Worcester, allowing four earned runs on five hits (including three home runs), four walks, and three strikeouts. He threw 87 pitches (55 strikes) and generated 12 whiffs. Bryan Mata and Nick Burdi combined for three scoreless frames of relief. Offensively, Max Ferguson led the way by going 2 for 4 with an RBI double that scored Abraham Toro. Mikey Romero and Corey Rosier (who drew one walk) both doubled for their only hits of the night.

For a more detailed breakdown, also check out the last two episodes of the SoxProspects Podcast from August 11th and August 24th, and video from his outings on 8/10/25 and 8/22/25 on the SoxProspects Twitter.

How acquired: 2024 Draft, 50th overall
Bonus: $2,000,000
