Cup of Coffee: Dalbec doubles twice, McDonough homers in Worcester's season finale

9/23 Cup of Coffee:
Despite taking a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning, the WooSox fell to the IronPigs in their regular season finale on Sunday. Jason Alexander tossed five scoreless frames while Bobby Dalbec (pictured) scored three of his side's four runs. Tyler McDonough took responsibility for that other run when he went deep for the first time at the Triple-A level.

The WooSox dropped their final game of the season in rather heartbreaking fashion. Jason Alexander got the start on the mound and pitched well, scattering three hits and one walk with three strikeouts over five scoreless innings. Cam Booser allowed one unearned run in the sixth while Bailey Horn and Zack Kelly combined for 2 1/3 scoreless frames of relief. Jose Adames then surrendered six runs (all unearned) in the ninth and took the loss after serving up a walk-off grand slam to Darick Hall.

Bobby Dalbec, playing in perhaps his final game as a member of the Red Sox organization, led the way offensively by going 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs scored, and one stolen base. Chase Meidroth also doubled as part of a 2 for 4 showing. Tyler McDonough clubbed a two-run home run (his first at the Triple-A level) for his lone hit of the afternoon and picked up another RBI on a run-scoring groundout. Max Ferguson plated a run as well while Roman Anthony went 0 for 3 with a walk.

With Sunday's loss, the WooSox ended the second half with a record of 44-31 and the regular season with a record of 79-71. They finished 4 1/2 games back of the Columbus Clippers (48-26) for the International League's second-half title.

Player of the Day: Bobby Dalbec gets the nod here for leading his side in total bases (5) on Sunday. Even after being designated for assignment and outrighted off the 40-man roster a few weeks ago, the 29-year-old ended his season on a solid note by slashing .281/.338/.516 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 17 September contests for Worcester. Once ranked as highly as the No. 2 prospect in the organization, Dalbec is currently in line to reach minor-league free agency this winter.
