Podcast Ep. #132: The cat is looking at me skeptically

Throughout the year, we get questions about who the Red Sox will protect from the Rule 5 Draft in the coming offseason. This week, we learned who those players are, so what better time to discuss? Why did the Red Sox protect Jalen Beeks, Ty Buttrey, and Chandler Shepherd? Listen and find out! Plus, the Arizona Fall League is over, so we recapped the fall campaigns of Michael Chavis, Henry Owens, and their compatriots on the league champion Peoria Javelinas. Finally, we mused about how Blake Swihart and Marco Hernandez might fit on the 2018 Red Sox roster.

Fall/Winter League Roundup: Chavis helps Peoria to AFL Title

This continues our series of weekly roundups of the Fall/Winter Leagues. Coverage will continue every Monday into January. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. This week's roundup covers the period from November 13 - November 19.

Arizona Fall League
The breakout 2017 for Michael Chavis ended on a high note. The 2013 first-round pick got the start at first base and went 2 for 5 with a triple as Peoria took the Arizona Fall League championship in Saturday's final. Chavis played a key role in the final push. In the November 14th contest, Chavis raced to an inside-the-park homer when a pair of outfielders collided. He followed that up with a more traditional eighth-inning round tripper that took the defense out of equation. Chad De La Guerra went 3 for 10 with a pair of RBI in the final week, and Josh Tobias went 1 for 4 in a start last Monday. Neither De La Guerra or Tobias appeared in the championship.

Fall/Winter League Roundup: Down fall week for Sox prospects

This continues our series of weekly roundups of the Fall/Winter Leagues. Coverage will continue every Monday into January. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. This week's roundup covers the period from November 6 - November 13.

Arizona Fall League
It was a tough week for Red Sox prospects in Arizona. Michael Chavis played in four games, getting time in at third base, first base, and DH. He only had three hits in 14 at-bats with a home run, three RBI, three walks, and six strikeouts. However, his numbers still remain solid on the season with a .263/.341/.447 line. Though unspectacular, that was the best hitting performance of the week as Chad De La Guerra managed two singles in eight at-bats and Josh Tobias went hitless in seven at-bats.

Bobby Poyner (pictured, right) was the lone pitching bright spot on the week, throwing a scoreless inning but allowing two hits. That was far better than Henry Owens, who gave up four earned runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 inning, taking the loss. Ty Buttrey gave up an earned run on three hits in an inning. Finally, Kevin McAvoy was the only pitcher to pitch in multiple games with a scoreless inning in the first outing but allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk over two innings while striking out a batter.

Podcast Ep. #131.5: #Addendum

We recorded a podcast. Then the Red Sox went and did things that made the podcast old news before we even released it. So here is an addendum to our last episode, talking about the additions of Bryce Brentz and Williams Jerez to the 40-man roster; why Rusney Castillo might never see the majors under his current contract; and the Red Sox making some MLB coaching hires, including a few with ties to the farm system. Chris also opened the show with a few words about the passing of 17-year-old Daniel Flores.

SoxProspects.com mourns the passing of Daniel Flores

The owners and staff here at SoxProspects.com were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Daniel Flores today due to complications during treatment for cancer. We send our sincere condolences to Daniel's family and those in the Red Sox organization who had the opportunity to get to know this 17-year-old young man.

We here at SoxProspects contribute to the website because we love what we do. Getting to follow the journeys of the players who enter the system as they strive to become major leaguers is one of the best parts of the job. Flores, a catcher signed this past July out of Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, certainly held great promise on the field based on reports—as much as any addition to the farm system in recent memory. We eagerly looked forward to seeing him play for the first time this spring. However, on-field prowess is beside the point in a situation such as this—the tragedy of a young life cut short much too soon puts the game on the field into perspective.

Rest in peace, Daniel.

Podcast Ep. #131: #BlameHatfield

Chris and Ian are back to wrap up the 2017 season and look ahead to 2018. In news, the club signed some minor league free agents and the major league club got a new manager. How might those events trickle down to other players and coaches in the system? Is Bryce Brentz coming back? Is Carlos Febles moving up to the majors? (As it turned out, the answer to both was "yes.") Plus, the fall and winter leagues are up and running, so we're due for an update. Wrapping up the 2017 season, the guys discussed some season-end awards and the site's official season-end rankings.
