Red Sox select Blake Wehunt with ninth-round pick
With the 268th overall pick in the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Blake Wehunt, a right-handed pitcher out of Kennesaw State (GA) University.
Wehunt is a sinkerball specialist who generates lots of ground-ball outs and features good control. As a Senior for Kennesaw State, he struck out 80 batters while walking only 23 in 76 1/3 innings, posting a 4.83 ERA on the year. He transferred from Southern Mississippi, where he allowed 19 runs in 11 innings in 14 appearances over three seasons.
He is an imposing physical specimen, standing 6'7", 240 and throwing from a three-quarters arm slot. He supplements the 91-mile per hour sinker with an intriguing low-80's changeup.
