Fall/Winter League Roundup: Hernandez goes yard, Lugo stays hot

As the calendar reaches the end of December, the Caribbean winter leagues are beginning to reach the end of their regular seasons. The Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League stretches just into the new year, while the playoffs in the Dominican Professional Baseball League began on Sunday. Many Red Sox minor leaguers are still in the mix as they help to try and make the Caribbean Series.

The standard-bearer for farmhand performance in Puerto Rico this week was Matthew Lugo. The infielder was 8 for 22 on the week, including a trio of multi-hit games. He also had a 3-for-5 performance, including four RBI and a home run on December 15 against Mayaguez. Juan Montero was 0 for 2 in one game with Leones, but he did score a run and draw a walk. The pitching was much less strong, as both Henry Nunez and Nate Tellier both had one appearance. Nunez surrendered three runs across his two-inning stint, while it was one run on a hit and a pair of walks in one inning for Tellier.

Dominican Professional Baseball League
The regular season ended on Friday and Nick Sogard's Toros Del Este did not qualify for the playoffs, nor did Victor Santos, the only two players active in the league. Sogard was 2 for 11 over his final three games, while Santos did not pitch this week.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Darwinzon Hernandez was the only player to appear in Venezuela this week. He pitched twice, combining to strike out four batters over two innings of work. He did not allow a hit or a run in either appearance.

Colombian Professional Baseball League
Ronaldo Hernandez (pictured), the only active player in Colombia, had a strong week for Tigres. He was 5 for 17 with six runs, four RBI and a home run, going yard on Tuesday. He's been a mainstay in the middle of the order with a .869 OPS so far this season.

Panama Pro Baseball Association
Play in Panama started on December 9. It is often difficult to find information about Probeis, such as rosters, but so far, it appears that native Panamanian outfielder Eduardo Vaughan and Cuban right-hander Yusniel Padron-Artiles are participating, for las Aguilas Metropolitanas and los Atlanticos de Bocas, respectively. Through December 14 (the last date for which box scores are available on the Probeis website), Vaughan has hit .286/.500/.429 in 20 plate appearances, while Padron-Artiles has allowed just an unearned run in nine innings over two starts on nine hits, striking out two and walking none.
