Fall/Winter Round-up: Yorke delivers grand slam

With a litany of postponements across the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, it was a quiet week in the Fall and Winter Leagues, aside from a grand slam from Nick Yorke (pictured) on Monday for the Scorpions, while Pedro Castellanos made his debut in Venezuela and Franklin German did the same thing in the Dominican.

Arizona Fall League

The Arizona Fall League is entering the home stretch, as its regular season closes November 12. Thaddeus Ward did not pitch again this week after his left oblique strain, but Jacob Webb had two appearances, with a clean inning each time. He struck out three batters over the week. Aaron Perry coughed up one run and two hits over his inning of work, while Ryan Zeferjahn struggled in his start on Tuesday. In three innings, he gave up five hits and three runs, all three of which came on a three-run homer.

Nick Yorke had the stand-out performance at the plate, going 2 for 8, hitting a grand slam on Monday as part of a five-RBI performance. He also worked a walk in each of his appearances on the week. Wilyer Abreu was 2 for 9 at the plate, worked three walks and came around to score four times, while Stephen Scott also had a trio of free passes as part of his 2 for 12 week. However, it was a struggle at the plate for Niko Kavadas, who went 0 for 7 with six strikeouts, though he did work on base on balls.

Dominican Professional Baseball League

It was a relatively quiet week in the Dominican, as several games were postponed. However, Franklin German struck out three hitters in a pair of appearances over two innings, with just a walk and hit allowed in his fall debut. Enmanuel Valdez also appeared in a pair of contests, hitting 0 for 5, while Chase Shugart gave up a pair of runs in his only inning of work on the week.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Venezuela was similarly slow, with several washouts. Pedro Castellanos was the only player in the system to appear, hitting 1 for 8 with a pair of runs across two games.
