Cup of Coffee: Mayer ropes first double, Hickey debuts


8/13 Cup of Coffee: Portland and Greenville had big offensive nights, highlighted by Stephen Scott (pictured), Jaxx Groshans, and Triston Casas. Nick Yorke also stayed hot, while Marcelo Mayer had a nice game for the FCL Sox, who saw another debut from a 2021 draft pick in Nathan Hickey. Chase Shugart and Angel Bastardo had productive starts for Greenville and the FCL Sox, respectively. Rain also washed out three games.

Syracuse Mets (NYM) @ Worcester Red Sox, Postponed (rain)
Kyle Schwarber's Red Sox debut will have to wait, as this one was washed out. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow.

Portland Sea Dogs 8, Somerset Patriots (NYY) 7
The Portland offense bounced right back from a rough start from Josh Winckowski by scoring seven in the second inning. Winckowski gave up five runs and recorded just one out. Roldani Baldwin roped a three-run homer in the second inning, while Triston Casas went 2 for 3 with two singles and was also hit by a pair of pitches. Devlin Granberg and Jeisson Rosario each went 2 for 4, with Granberg driving in two runs. Cameron Cannon also picked up a two-bagger. Matthew Kent pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing just two runs with five strikeouts and only one walk. Jake Thompson was also impressive out of the bullpen with 1 1/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Joan Martinez picked up a two-inning save without allowing a hit and punching out two.

Bowling Green Hot Rods (TB) 10, Greenville Drive 7 (11 innings)
Stephen Scott had a massive night at the plate, going 4 for 5 with two doubles. He is now hitting .422 in 11 games with Greenville. Jaxx Groshans also had a big night with a double, a home run, and three RBI. Tyler Dearden also belted his 16th long ball of the year. Nick Sogard had two hits and Jake MacKenzie doubled and walked. Chase Shugart had another nice start, allowing one run in 5 2/3 frames on just three hits. Jacob Wallace followed by allowing a run over two innings with four strikeouts and just one walk.

Fredericksburg Nationals (WAS) 5, Salem Red Sox 1
Nick Yorke was the lone bright spot in this one, going 2 for 4 to raise his batting average to .321 on the season. Alex Erro reached twice with a walk and a single, and Ceddanne Rafaela drove in the only run with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Jorge Rodriguez struggled a bit in this start, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings with just one strikeout. Alexander Montero was solid after Rodriguez, going the final 3 1/3 innings while surrendering just one run with four strikeouts and one walk.

FCL Red Sox 7, FCL Orioles Orange (BAL) 6
It was a big day for the FCL Sox, as 2021 fourth overall pick Marcelo Mayer went 2 for 5 with his first career double. Boston's fifth pick of 2021, Nathan Hickey, made his professional debut behind the dish and went 0 for 2. Brainer Bonaci went 2 for 5 with his ninth double as well as a steal of third for his fifth theft of the year. Miguel Ugueto continued his hot season, as the 18-year old went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI, raising his OPS to .930. Philip Sikes and Freddy Valdez each added two hits, including a double for Sikes. Angel Bastardo had a very nice outing, starting the game by going 3 2/3 innings with two unearned runs allowed, no walks, and five strikeouts. Jose Larez had a nice appearance out of the pen with two hitless innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Osvaldo De La Rosa and Merfy Andrew added scoreless innings of their own.

Player of the Day: Stephen Scott continued his red hot pace since being called up to Greenville on July 29th. The 24-year old has at least one hit in every game he's played in for the Drive and now has a whopping 12 extra-base hits in 11 games for the club.
