Red Sox select Hunter Dobbins with eighth-round pick

With its eighth-round pick in the 2021 MLB draft, Boston has selected Hunter Dobbins, a right-handed pitcher from Texas Tech University. A midweek starter for the Red Raiders in 2020, Dobbins appeared in six games, pitching 20 innings with a 1.35 ERA. Dobbins tore his UCL prior to the 2021 season and elected to undergo Tommy John surgery.

The soon-to-be 22-year-old Dobbins is 6-foot-2, with a well-built frame. Prior to surgery, his fastball reached 98 mph. The Bryan, Texas native also mixes in a slider and a changeup. He was projected to be a weekend starter in 2021 but was hurt in an intrasquad scrimmage two weeks prior to the start of the season.
