Fall/Winter League Roundup: Reyes keeps dealing, VZ starts up

The fall/winter leagues have been going on for a few weeks, but Covid-19 factors have resulted in the cancellation of the Arizona Fall League as well as several games across the various winter leagues. Coverage of the winter leagues will continue every Monday into January. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. This week's roundup covers the period up to November 29th.

Mexican Pacific League

Joey Meneses played in all five games this week for Culiacan and continued to see most of his playing time at third base. He has also found himself hitting either fourth or fifth in the lineup and had another solid week, hitting .277 over 18 at-bats with 2 walks and a home run.

Dominican Professional Baseball League

Denyi Reyes (pictured, above) continued his torrid start to the winter season tossing four more shutout innings for Escogido. He now has yet to allow a run over eight innings with 10 strikeouts to just one walk. Righty Joel Payamps took a loss in his only appearance after giving up an earned run on two hits with two strikeouts for Estrellas.

On the other side of the ball, catcher Deivy Grullon was coming off a hot week for Aguilas, but went only 2-for-7 this week in limited action. Outfielder Johan Mieses came off the bench and went 1-for-3 with a double in his first action of the winter. For this coming week, look for Roldani Baldwin to potentially make his debut with Licey, as he joined the club on Monday.

Overall, it was a very short week in the Dominican, with games early in the week rained out and games throughout the week canceled due to continuing COVID-19 issues. That is something fans should expect to continue to see for the foreseeable future.

(Nicaragua) National Professional Baseball League

The Red Sox have two participants, lefty Nixson Munoz pitching for Boer and righty Roniel Raudes pitching for Rivas. This past week they had nearly identical lines in their lone appearance, throwing 1 inning each while allowing two hits, two earned runs, and a home run along with two strikeouts. The only difference was Raudes added a walk as well.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

The league kicked off on the 27th. The only Red Sox prospect who participated over the first weekend was catcher Jhonny Pereda. Hitting fifth for Caracas, he started off the weekend hot, going 3-for-5 on Friday with a double but went hitless the rest of the week, finishing with a .250/.308/.333 line.

Panama Professional Baseball League

This league will kick off in January, with Jonathan Arauz and Eduardo Vaughan, the organization's two native Panamanians, expected to see playing time as teammates for Las Aguilas Metropolitanas.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

As was mentioned last week, this league does not start up until December, but will be one to keep an eye on with Jarren Duran, ranked fourth on the SoxProspects.com rankings, playing for Caguas.

Australian Baseball League

After taking the league by storm in 2019, Colin Willis will return as a member of the Melbourne outfield when play begins on December 18.
