Red Sox select Brian Brown with their ninth-round pick

Brian Brown, a left-handed pitcher from NC State University, is Boston's ninth-round pick in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft at No. 280 overall.

Brown was the only pitcher in the Wolfpack's starting rotation from start to finish, making 16 starts in his senior season. He led the team with 98 2/3 innings pitched and 98 strikeouts. He posted a 7-2 record and had a pair of complete games. He walked 26 batters and had a .229 batting average against.

Listed at 6-feet, 183 pounds, Brown was on the midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list and was the ACC's Pitcher of the Year. He pitches from a low arm slot with a fastball at 83-87 mph with a changeup that is his best offering, with the ability to miss bats with the offspeed pitch. He also throws a breaking ball and because of his low velocity, will succeed if he can change eye levels and speeds effectively.

Slot value for the 280th overall pick is $144,600 but as a senior, he will likely sign for well below slot.

Brown was also a two-time ACC Academic All-American.
