Fall/Winter League Roundup: Tavarez debuts, Elias pitches a gem

This continues our series of weekly roundups of the Fall/Winter Leagues. Coverage will continue every Monday into January. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through January. This week's roundup covers the period from November 20 - November 26.

Dominican Baseball League
Aneury Tavarez (pictured), who was re-signed to a minor league deal in October, made his debut for the Estrellas last week, going 0 for 6 over two games with two walks and three strikeouts. Chris Madera went 0 for 2 with a strikeout, and he now has only two hits over his last 14 at-bats.

On the mound, Roenis Elias had a strong start on Friday, tossing six shutout innings and allowing only two hits while walking three and striking out three. He has not allowed a run over 10 innings with the Aguilas. Williams Jerez got two outs over two appearances without allowing a baserunner, and Marcus Walden was hit hard in his one appearance, allowing three runs over 1 2/3 innings.

While some were concerned with Blake Swihart's lack of playing time after his hot start, Peter Gammons reported that Swihart was only scheduled for a three-week stint, and he is now back in New Mexico as he prepares to get married. Swihart hit .407/.515/.481 over 27 at-bats.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Dedgar Jimenez gave up a two-run home run over his two innings, and Josh Smith allowed one hit and struck out two over two shutout innings. Juan Hernandez went 0 for 6 and Deiner Lopez went 0 for 1 in a light week for the hitters.

Mexican Pacific League
After being added to the 40-man roster, both Bryce Brentz and Chandler Shepherd did not appear in a game last week.

Australian Baseball League
Daniel McGrath has yet to appear in a game for Melbourne over the first two weeks of the season.

Venezuelan Developmental Program
The Boston squad went 1-1-1 last week, with Pedro Castellanos going 3 for 10 with a double and three RBI. Freiberg Marin went 3 for 5 over two appearances, and Reinaldo Ugueto went 2 for 3 in his only start. Yorvin Pantoja pitched well in a loss, allowing two runs over five innings, walking two and striking out three.

Colombian Professional Baseball League
Jose Sermo appeared in three games last week, going 3 for 11 with a home run, two walks, and four strikeouts. His OPS now sits at .793 over 53 at-bats.

Arizona Fall League
As noted in our last entry, the AFL has already wrapped up play. However, it was worth noting that Michael Chavis ranked 12th on Jim Callis' list of the top prospects in the circuit over at MLBPipeline.com.
