2017 MLB Amateur Draft picks 1-30
The 2017 MLB Amateur Draft is underway with 30 players selected so far. The two-way player has dominated all talk surrounding this year's draft, but it was high school shortstop Royce Lewis who was taken number one overall by the Minnesota Twins. High school phenom Hunter Greene, who has first round talent on the mound and at the plate, was selected as a pitcher by the Cincinnati Reds. Brendan McKay, who won the 2017 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award for a third consecutive season, currently has a 1.121 OPS with the bat and a 2.34 ERA on the mound. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays and is expected to hit and pitch in their minor league system.
Between Greene and McKay, the San Diego Padres took another high school arm in left-hander Mackenzie Gore from Whiteville High School in North Carolina. Eight of the first 14 picks were high school players.
With the 24th overall pick, the Boston Red Sox selected Tanner Houck, a right-handed pitcher from Missouri. He was ranked 22nd by Baseball America, 20th by MLB Pipeline, and 26th by Perfect Game USA. He has a 3.33 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 94 2/3 innings at Missouri in 2017. There were a few Red Sox ties with other picks in the top 30, as San Francisco Giants' 19th overall pick Heliot Ramos is the younger brother of former Red Sox prospect Henry Ramos. David Peterson, a left-handed pitcher from Oregon who went to the New York Mets at number 20, was selected by Boston out of high school in the 28th round in 2014. Jeren Kendall, an outfielder from Vanderbilt, was also taken by the Sox in the 2014 draft, in the 30th round. He was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers one pick before the Red Sox.
Keston Hiura and Jake Burger were linked to the Red Sox in some mock drafts, but Kiura was taken 9th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers and Burger was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 11th overall pick.
