Red Sox select pitcher Logan Allen with their eighth-round pick
With their eighth-round pick, the Red Sox have selected Logan Allen, a left-handed pitcher from the IMG Academy. Allen is originally from Asheville, North Carolina, and transferred to IMG before his junior year. He was rated by Baseball America as the 128th-best player in the draft, and Perfect Game ranked him 117th.
Allen, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, dominated competition in both of his seasons at IMG. He was named a Perfect Game 2nd-team All American and Atlantic All-Region 1st team after posting a 0.88 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 95 innings of work. As a junior he was named a 2014 Perfect Game Underclass 2nd Team.
Allen added strength senior year and with it came an inrease in velocity, as he went from throwing his fastball in the mid-80s to consistently sitting in the low 90s. He supplements the fastball with a curveball and a changeup. He has shown some feel for the change, and has actually featured two different curves, a harder one that has action more like a slider, and a bigger, slower alternative.
The 18-year-old is committed to the University of South Carolina.
Scouting info was compiled from industry publications including Baseball America, Perfect Game USA, and MLB.com.
