Manuel Margot promoted to Double-A Portland

Outfielder Manuel Margot (pictured, left) has been promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, the club announced on Monday. The fifth-ranked prospect on SoxProspects.com, Margot is scheduled to be in the lineup for Portland's game at the Reading Fightin Phils this evening.

Margot, 20, will be the second-youngest player in the Eastern League and seventh-youngest player in Double-A, per Minor League Central. He has a .282/.321/.420 slash line in 46 games with High-A Salem this season. He missed most of May with a strained intercostal muscle, but was still among the Carolina League leaders in stolen bases with 20.

Margot began the season without striking out in his first 62 at-bats, a streak extending to 79 at-bats dating back to last year. His aggressive approach at the plate resulted in only 15 strikeouts and 11 walks in 198 plate appearances.

An international free agent from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, signed in 2011, Margot's lifetime minor league stats include a .285/.355/.425 slash line, 20 home runs, 142 RBI, 178 runs and 113 stolen bases at four different levels. He projects to be a well above-average defender in center field, where his plus range, great reads, and plus-plus speed allow him to cover plenty of ground. He also has the ability to hit for some power, as he hit 12 home runs last season, split between Greenville and Salem, after managing just one home run, and that of the inside-the-park variety, the previous year in Lowell.

In a corresponding move, Sea Dogs outfielder Dave Sappelt was placed on the disabled list.
