Bullpen conversions highlight Portland roster

The Double-A Portland Sea Dogs announced their roster today. The 2015 season appears to be one of transition for Portland as the highly-regarded prospects that filled Hadlock Field the last few years have graduated to Pawtucket or Boston. Meanwhile the next wave of high-ranked talent in the organization is currently in either Salem or Greenville.

Outfielder Henry Ramos (pictured) and and infielder Carlos Asuaje, ranked 21st and 29th, respectively, by SoxProspects.com, are the most interesting bats in the lineup to start the year.

The Portland starting rotation will likely be anchored by returning right-handers Luis Diaz, Justin Haley, and Mike Augliera. Alex Speier recently reported that Pat Light will pitch out of the bullpen for Portland, where his blazing fastball may be better utilized, while based on his action in spring training, right-hander Simon Mercedes seems to be headed for a similar transition. Other top 60 prospects in the bullpen include right-handers Kyle Martin and Jonathan Aro.

While the lineup may be thin, midseason call-ups from Salem may bolster the roster, especially if center fielder Manuel Margot progresses as expected.

The Sea Dogs open the 2015 season at home on April 9 against Reading.
