Fall/Winter League Roundup: AFL winds down, Vazquez makes debut

Arizona Fall League

Surprise wrapped up action this week, dropping their final game, 5-2 to Peoria on Thursday. The Saguaros finished 16-15 for the season. At the plate, Sean Coyle finished up his last three games strong, going 5 for 12 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Coyle's infield partner, Deven Marrero (pictured) was 3 for 8 with a run scored in his last two games, finishing with a .328/.414/.443 line in 17 games. Marrero finished first in OBP and third in batting average among AFL participants.

On the mound, Keith Couch won his lone start of the week, tossing four scoreless innings Wednesday against Scottsdale. Teammate Robby Scott added a scoreless inning of relief against the Scorprions, finishing up his fall action. Madison Younginer picked up his first victory of the fall on Tuesday against Mesa, despite allowing a run in his lone inning of work. Aaron Kurcz made two appearances against Peoria this week, allowing a run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The AFL Championship game took place on Sunday, as Salt River took home the title with a convincing 14-7 victory over Peoria.  

Dominican Baseball League

Aneury Tavarez continued to see regular playing time, going 6 for 18 with three RBI in six contests. representing one of the successes, collecting three hits in seven at-bats while driving in two runs. Heri Quevedo picked up the victory on Friday against Toros, allowing an unearned run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Edwin Escobar made three relief appearances this week, allowing a run in 1 2/3 innings on Sunday against Zulia. Escobar also tossed a scoreless inning of relief against Oriente on Wednesday, and allowed a hit and a walk without recording an out against Zulia on Friday.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

Dayan Diaz appeared in three games this week, pitching a scoreless inning in his first two appearances. In his last appearance against Caguas on Sunday, Diaz allowed two runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Henry Ramos got a hit in each of his five games this week, going 6 for 22 with a home run and two RBI. Christian Vazquez made his debut for San Juan this week, going 4 for 14 with an RBI in five games.

Venezuelan Liga Paralela

Boston's affiliate went 3-2 this week. Victor Acosta continued to be white hot at the plate, going 8 for 17 with six RBI in four games. Mario Alcantara turned in a strong outing on Friday against Tampa Bay, tossing five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out five.
