Red Sox select Ben Moore with their eighth-round pick

With their eighth-round pick, the Red Sox have selected Ben Moore, a catcher from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.

The 6-foot-1, 195 pound right-handed hitting Moore compiled a .305/.367/.481 line at the plate this season, hitting nine home runs and adding 35 RBI. Ranked as the 315th prospect in the draft by Baseball America, Moore primarily played outfield after spending more time catching during the early part of his college career.

Moore has impressive contact ability, striking out in only about 9% of his at-bats during the course of his college career.

The 21-year-old junior is a former two-sport athlete, who is second in Cullman High School (Cullman, AL) history for rushing yards in a season (2,036). In his three-year college career, Moore hit .307/.375/.443 with 15 home runs and 111 RBI. Moore was a member of the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League last summer, hitting .222 with a home run and 17 RBI in 34 contests.
