2014 MLB Amateur Draft picks 1-14

Day One of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft is underway and the first 14 picks are now in the books. For the third consecutive year, the Houston Astros picked first in the draft.

With the first overall pick the Astros selected high school left-hander Brady Aiken. Miami followed with another high school arm in hard-throwing right-hander Tyler Kolek. The Chicago White Sox took the first college player with left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodon out of North Carolina State University while the Chicago Cubs took the first college bat in catcher Kyle Schwarber out of Indiana University.

The biggest surprise in the first 14 picks was the Cubs selection of Kyle Schwarber who was expected to go in the teens. With the fifth pick the Minnesota Twins took shortstop Nick Gordon, the son of former Red Sox pitcher Tom Gordon. One other notable selection was right-hander Tyler Beede by the San Francisco Giants with 15th pick. Beede, a Massachusetts native, was also a first round pick back in 2011 by the Toronto Blue Jays, but decided to go to Vanderbilt instead.
