Fall/Winter League Roundup: Saguaros get on a roll, Dominican League begins


The Dominican Winter League began this week as offseason baseball kicked into full swing. This week's roundup covers the period of October 14-20.

Arizona Fall League:

The Surprise Saguaros went 4-2 this week, and are currently on a three game winning streak. Mookie Betts appeared in three games this week, going 2 for 8 with a double, RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Fellow infielder Garin Cecchini (pictured) had a nice week, going 6 for 15 two doubles, two RBI and four walks in four contests. 


Travis Shaw continued to display power, going 3 for 13 with two home runs and eight RBI. Derrik Gibson remained hitless this fall, going 0 for 4 with three walks and a run scored in two games played.

Red Sox pitchers fared pretty well this week, with Noe Ramirez leading the way out of the bullpen. The right-hander threw three scoreless innings in two outings, striking out two and walking two. Ramirez has thrown 5 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Saguaros. Keith Couch also provided quality relief, hurling three scoreless innings in two appearances, striking out four and walking one. Couch also collected the save in Friday's win over Mesa. 

Miguel Pena received the start on Tuesday against Salt River, tossing 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks, striking out two. Pete Ruiz took the mound on Thursday against Scottsdale, picking up the win thanks to two innings of relief. Ruiz allowed one run on three hits and a walk, striking out one. 

Venezuelan Winter League:

Ellis Jimenez made two appearances out of the bullpen for Margarita, tossing three innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. 

At the plate, Ronald Bermudez was 2 for 6 with two strikeouts for Caracas and Mario Martinez went hitless in his lone at-bat for Lara. 

Mexican Pacific League:

Terry Doyle received the start for Mexicali on Friday against Mazatlan, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight in a no decision. 

Playing for Guasave, Mark Hamilton was 3 for 20 with a home run, two RBI, four runs scored and five walks in six games this week. 

Jesus Loya appeared in his second contest on Sunday, going hitless in his lone at-bat for Hermosillo.  

Dominican Winter League:

Keury De La Cruz made his debut for the Aguilas, going 0 for 4 with a run scored. 

Bryce Brentz, playing for Escogido, was 1 for 9 with a double and two strikeouts in three games played. 

Dan Butler struck out in his lone at-bat for Este. 

Jonathan Diaz was 1 for 5 with three walks in two contests for the Gigantes. 

Chris Martin picked up the save on Friday for Escogido, tossing one scoreless inning, striking out two. 

Rafael Perez made his debut for Gigantes, hurling 1/3 of an inning against Licey on Saturday. 

Venezuelan Liga Paralela:

Action for Liga Paralela began on October 10th, with the majority of the Red Sox contingent playing for the "Boston" squad. Of note so far at the plate, Pablo Urena is 6 for 20 with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored.
