Smith, Rijo, Flores, Meyers added to Lowell from GCL

With the Lowell Spinners a half game out of a playoff spot with three games to play, the team has announced that right-hander Myles Smith and second baseman Wendell Rijo (pictured) have been called up from the GCL Red Sox.

SoxProspects.com sources have learned that shortstop Raymel Flores and left fielder Mike Meyers are also with the Spinners. Lowell is slated to start a three-game series at the Aberdeen IronBirds (BAL) later today. The club needs the reinforcements for their playoff push, as outfielder Forrestt Allday and reliever Greg Larson are reportedly injured and will miss the rest of the season.

Smith, the team's fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft, has allowed only one hit in his first eight innings as a professional, walking none and striking out nine. The 21-year-old will face more age-appropriate competition in the New York-Penn League.

Rijo was up-and-down this season in the GCL, but it has been a positive first season as a professional for the soon-to-be 18-year-old infielder. After starting the season with a .167 batting average in his first nine games, Rijo went on a tear, batting .415/.508/.585 over the next 16 games while winning the SoxProspects.com Player of the Week award for July 15-21. In all, he hit .271/.368/.359 in 49 games, while adding 15 stolen bases.

Flores, the other half of the middle infield for the GCL Red Sox, was also called up. After a strong debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2012, Flores did not find the same success in his stateside debut. He hit only .185 in 49 games while slugging only nine extra-base hits.

Meyers, who moved to left field this season after being drafted as an infielder, went on the disabled list after only two games, but returned after missing close to a month to bat .256. He played in 26 games total after appearing in 30 games with the GCL Red Sox last season.
