The New York-Penn League All-Star rosters have been announced, and includes three representatives from the Lowell Spinners: pitchers Sergio Gomez and Kyle Martin, and utility man Kevin Mager (pictured). Gomez and Mager will travel to Norwich, Conn. as part of the American League roster for the August 13 event. Martin will not join them, as he was promoted to the Low A Greenville Drive last week.
Gomez, 19, adds to his collection of All-Star accolades. The lanky right-hander was named a Post-Season All-Star in the Gulf Coast League in 2012. Moving between the Spinners rotation and bullpen, Gomez has been outstanding this season, posting a 1.81 ERA and 1.075 WHIP in 44 2/3 innings pitched. He has 50 strikeouts and only 13 walks. His 10.1 K/9 ratio ranks third in the circuit among pitchers with at least 40 innings. Gomez accentuated his All-Star bid with a stellar effort on Thursday when he earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit in six shutout innings.
Mager signed with the Red Sox in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Rollins College (FL). The versatile Mager has played a key role for Lowell, seeing time at five positions, including an inning as a pitcher. He has a .306/.387/.422 slash line, and leads the Spinners both in slugging percentage and in doubles (9).
Martin, a ninth-round choice in June out of Texas A&M, was dominant against New York-Penn League competition out of the Lowell bullpen before his promotion. The 6-foot-6 righty gave up only one earned run in 19 innings pitched, allowing just 11 hits and walking three while striking out 15.
