2013 Red Sox Draft Preview: Part 1 of 5

It’s that time of year again, as the MLB First-Year Player Draft gets underway in just three days, on the evening of Thursday, June 6. The first round will kick off at 7:00 pm ET from Studio 42 at the MLB Network studio in Secaucus, N.J., broadcast live on the MLB Network and MLB.com. Day One will include the first, supplemental, second, and competitive balance rounds. Day Two will start at 1:00 pm on June 7, covering rounds three through 10, and Day Three will kick off at 1:00 pm on June 8, covering rounds 11 through 40. Days Two and Three will be exclusively covered on MLB.com.

This will be the fourth draft with Director of Amateur Scouting Amiel Sawdaye at the helm of the Red Sox ship. Sawdaye’s 2011 and 2010 daft classes were quite impressive, featuring multiple potential impact players in Jackie Bradley, Matt Barnes, Henry Owens, Blake Swihart, Mookie Betts, Bryce Brentz, Anthony Ranaudo, Brandon Workman, Sean Coyle, and Garin Cechhini.  On the other hand, the 2012 draft class – the first draft class capped by a bonus pool  has looked quite poor at this early stage. Admittedly, it's way too early to draw any conclusions, but not one player from the class has thoroughly impressed a year removed from the draft.

Sawdaye will have options to add some more high-end talent this draft, as the Red Sox have three selections in the first 81 picks, including the seventh overall pick – the highest selection the club has had since 1993. That said, this season’s bonus pool cap is $6,830,200. That figure is a shade lower than last year's cap, given that last year's bonus pool was bolstered by two compensation picks for the loss of Jonathan Papelbon.

Here on SoxProspects.com, we'll bring you pre-draft coverage all week leading up to the draft, this being the first of a five-installment draft preview. You can also follow Days One, Two, and Three of the draft here, as we’ll have live coverage of Boston’s selections on SoxProspects News, the 2013 Draft page, and the @SoxProspects Twitter account. For now, here's some general information to whet your palette.
