Winter League Roundup: December 10-16


Marco Duarte and  Ivan DeJesus highlighted Winter League action this week as they continued to put together stellar offseasons.

Dominican Winter League

Mauro Gomez started the week off hot with a grand slam against Gigantes on Thursday  followed up by a 1 for 3 evening the next night with with two runs scored against the same foe. After an 0 for 4 on Saturday, Gomez was 1 for 5 with an RBI double on Sunday. 

Alberto Rosario found his way into just two contests this week, going 1 for 5. 

Tony Pena Jr. tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out six. Pena picked up his first save on Saturday against Escogido.

The Dominican Winter League's All-Star contest happened on Tuesday as they faced off against the Venezuelan League All-Stars. No Red Sox prospects appeared in the contest as the Dominican League prevailed, 8-2. 

Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico) Baseball League

Anthony Carter, hurled 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief across two outings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Carter earned the save in both contests. 

Jose De La Torre continued to pitch well, tossing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out six over three appearances. 

Jeremy Kehrt picked up his second victory of the offseason by twirling 6 innings, allowing three runs on ten hits on Wednesday against Carolina. 

Jason Urquidez switched squads from Santurce to Mayaguez. This week as a member of his new team, Urquidez tossed 3 1/3 innings of flawless relief over two outings, striking out three. 

Ivan De Jesus (pictured) continued to swing a hot bat, going 8 for 23 with two doubles and two RBI in six games this week. De Jesus is now hitting .374/.406/.525 with two home runs and 17 RBI this offseason. 

Henry Ramos has also caught fire recently, going 10 for 21 with five doubles and an RBI this week.

The Puerto Rican League All-Star game took place last Sunday and a number of Red Sox prospects saw action. For the Isla squad, Ivan De Jesus was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI while Henry Ramos went 0 for 4. Jeremy Kehrt started the game for Isla, tossing a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and a walk. For the Metro squad, Jose De La Torre allowed one run on three hits while striking out two in his lone inning of relief. Jason Urquidez pitched the eighth inning for Isla, allowing one hit and punching out one. The Metro team won the contest 11-4.  

Mexican Pacific League

Marco Duarte (pictured) put together another fine outing on Friday against Obregon, picking up the victory by hurling 7 shutout innings. Duarte allowed just three hits and two walks while punching out five. 

Oscar Villarreal appeared in two games this week. On Wednesday against Mazatlan, Villarreal took the loss as he allowed a run on two hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings pitched. On Sunday, Villarreal bounced back, striking out the side and allowing just one hit in his lone inning of work. 

Australian Baseball League

Boss Moanaroa was 0 for 10 in three games. He has failed to record a hit in his last 21 at-bats. 

Daniel McGrath struggled in relief against Canberra, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in 2 innings of work. McGrath has now allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits in 8 1/3 innings pitched for Melbourne. 

Liga Paralela-Boston
Much like last year, the Red Sox are fielding nearly an entire team in the Liga Venezuela Beisbol Profesional's minor league, the Liga Paralela. The players are all in the lower levels of the minor league system, with many of them still in rookie ball. Alixon Suarez, Oscar Perez, Heiker Meneses, Dreily Guerrero, and Keivin Heras are some of the more notable names on the team.
The team went 4-1-0 this week, and is now 16-24-4 on the season. To follow the large contingent of players participating in the league, check out the league's official website.
