Lavarnway hits Boston as Nava heads to disabled list
First reported by NESN's Jenny Dell, Ryan Lavarnway (pictured) was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket as Daniel Nava was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a wrist injury before this evening's game against the Detroit Tigers.
The 24-year-old Lavarnway made his way into 17 games with Boston last season, hitting .231 with two home runs and eight RBI. This season with Pawtucket, Lavarnway has hit .295/.376/.439 with eight home runs and 43 RBI. He will serve as catching depth and a right-handed bat due to a short term injury to Kelly Shoppach as the team awaits the return of designated hitter David Ortiz.
In another roster move, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Clayton Mortenson to Pawtucket in order to make room for the newly acquired Craig Breslow.
