Red Sox select Mike Augliera in the fifth round

Mike Augliera (Binghamton University)
With their fifth-round pick in the draft, the Red Sox have selected Mike Augliera, a senior right-handed pitcher from Binghamton University.

Augliera impressed scouts when he pitched a one-hitter in the semi-finals of the America East tournament, striking out 7, and setting the Binghamton record with his 23rd career win. The outing capped an impressive season, in which Augliera led the nation in K/BB ratio, striking out 83 and walking only 7 in 82.2 innings pitched.

While the 6'0", 200 lb. right-hander does not have excellent velocity, topping out in the high 80's, has a plus curveball and a good feel for his slider. He was rated as having the best breaking pitch among all players in New York state by Perfect Game, which also rated him as having the best pitchability in the state. He is the first college senior taken by the Red Sox in the 2012 draft.
