Red Sox select Justin Haley in the sixth round

Justin Haley (Fresno State)
With their sixth-round pick in the draft, the Red Sox have selected Justin Haley, a junior right-handed pitcher from Fresno State.

Haley, who will turn 21 on June 16, compiled a 7-4 record with a 3.28 ERA in 22 appearances (12 starts) striking out 94 in 93.1 innings pitched. Drafted by Cleveland in the 46th round of the 2010 draft, Haley stands tall on the mound at 6'5", 230 lbs. During his first season with Fresno State as a sophomore in 2011, Haley went 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA, striking out 28 in 32.1 innings pitched.

Haley was ranked the 156th best prospect in the state of California by Baseball America leading up the draft. The right-hander features a fastball the sits between 91-93 mph and occasionally will touch 95 mph with heavy downward action. Originally projected to be picked between rounds 5-7, Haley flashes a quality breaking ball and a work-in-progress changeup.
